Assuming that Riley really was the top target and that Woodward really thought he had him at the doorstep of a deal or further, would you go back to his agent and try to make it impossible for him to say no?

I ask this because it’s likely how we got that direct quote from Saban not being the coach at Alabama years ago. I don’t remember exactly how their search went, but I believe they took a swing at Saban when Rich Rod chose Michigan. They didn’t get Saban the first time, but Mal Moore was told to go back and do whatever it took to get him. We all know the rest.

Is taking another run at Riley the best option, or do you shift gears and go to Kelly, Aranda, Napier or others?

Personally, I would take door number two and look to lock up who I feel is the next best available. Riley is a great coach and can recruit QBs against anyone, but he still has flaws and we saw some of them on display tonight and throughout this season.

Tough call. But I'm sure Woodward already has his contingency plans in place. I'll sit back and let the man do his job ... he's pretty good at it.

Just curious, what part about an offensive coach putting 33 points against the nations #3 defense was flawed?

We all agree he would need a great DC here, but his offensive did what very few could.

I say you forget Riley and leave it be. He doesn’t want us then we don’t want him.
You circle back with your 2nd tier guys still in play here…. Napier or Aranda. I don’t feel like they are settling. Third tier guys like Stoops or BoB are settling and will disappoint all of us.

Yep, even if they shouldn’t, but in the court of public opinion, you could be right

The head coach is responsible for the entire team. Their defense gave up more offense than OSU is usually able to muster because they weren’t good at all. Them scoring 33 should have been an automatic win. They still don’t prioritize defense in recruiting, which makes the job of their DC more difficult. Last, and most critical tonight, their special teams cost them the game. OSU dominated them in that phase, even with their own muff.

I agree. If he ends up with a BOB or Stoops, those could cost him his job in a year or two.

I have been critical of Riley because I think he's a great OC playing the role of HC. IOW, his football philosophy is unbalanced and not very mature. That's not to say he won't improve but that's who he his today.

That said, I don't think Riley's press conf means a whole lot one way or the other. Coaches say a lot as evasive maneuvers.

FTR, my first choice is Aranda. But I think Woody has everyone looking west (Jimbo, Riley, Aranda, Napier) when the real action somewhere back east (in a big way).
