let me preface by saying that i have no sauces nor have i ever claimed to have sauces
the cycle:
1. someone on the board starts a rumor
2. people decide they like the rumor and start threads about the rumor
3. looking for message board clout (my god that sounds sad), "insiders" start to drop tidbits of "information" from well placed sauces about the rumor. gotta get those sweet, sweet upvotes
4. similarly "content creators" who troll message boards start tweeting and writing articles about the rumor
5. the message board uses the articles and tweets as proof that the rumor is real (the feedback loop is now complete)
6. some type of hard news (contract extension, coach quote) comes out refuting the rumor
7. board goes into various stages of melt and despair ("we got played", "program is dying", etc)
8. out of the melt, someone starts a rumor and we're back at 1

Don’t forget the part about smokescreens

yeah, smokescreens are for the people who don't agree with the rumor. that's how they rationalize not liking the rumor
