Here's why I'm more than a little worried about the direction LSU goes in.

Tennessee since Fulmer:
Kiffin
Dooley
Jones

Miami since Davis:
Coker
Shannon
Stoutalnd
Golden
Scott
Richt

Notre Dame since Holtz:
Davie
O'Leary
Willingham
Baer
Weis
Kelly

USC since Pete Carroll:
Kiffin
Orgeron/Helton
Sarkisian
Helton

Texas:
Strong was hand picked and it's been a trainwreck

Florida since Spurrier (note: they hit the lottery with Urban):
Zook
Strong
Meyer
Muschamp
Durkin
McElwain

The point is most of these guys were never the school's first or second choice.

Fear of failure is the perfect reason to never change anything.

LSU has hired two national title winning coaches in a row, so yes the odds aren't great they will hire a third given the history of the sport.

With that said, the odds don't mean you don't try if it's time for Les to go and it was time. The sooner you move on the sooner you do hire the next national title winning coach, even if that is a few coaching hires down the line.

How about Ohio State since Tressel?

Add Michigan and their coaching litany to that list.

And Nebraska, and Washington... Soon to be Georgia.

Odds are NOT in our favor. Name the successful perennial powers outside of FSU (Bowden-->Jimbo) and arguably Miles succeeding Saban at LSU that got it right in recent history.

Also, name the last "big name" coach LSU has hired since ARNSPARGER.

ETA: the major hope I'm clinging to that LSU MIGHT get it right this time, is that we just fired one of the most successful LSU coaches in 120+ seasons of football mid-season. This hopefully shows we are NOT screwing around this time. But I have also not seen much competency from the AD office either.

It's true, we may have a bumpy ride for awhile, but we may not. I would prefer a season with possibilities, rather than the certain knowledge that we are drifting into mediocrity.

Les Miles has been bringing in average results for 4 years.

Maybe we continue getting average results even with a new coach, but at least we freakin tried.

Is there a guy like Urban Meyer (ie already won a title) out there LSU can hire that we aren't seeing?

I already started a thread asking that question and people got salty so I assume the answer is no.

Herman has won a national title in football as a head coach? When did this happen? Did I sleep through a year or something?

I clearly edited and detailed my mixup.

No reason to get your panties in a knot.

It was time for a change. Miles has recruited more talent than everyone except Nick Saban and has nothing to show for it since 2012. Not even a major bowl game.

We may struggle for a while but at this point I don't even care. We already know we have the talent and facilities we just need a fresh perspective.

I'd also venture to say Herman could have the same impact as Urban at Florida.

One would hope that's the case anyway.

Good observations. Logically the odds are against a homerun hire. We'll just have to wait and see

He isn't just sitting out of a job like Meyer was when OSU hired him. He has a pretty good job actually.

Not really. Herman is just today's hot non-Power 5 coach. Before him guys like Charlie Strong and Butch were the hot names.

Hell Butch and Charlie both went to BCS bowls with their programs. Herman hasn't matched that level of success yet.

Probably the best comparison since OSU owns the state of Ohio like LSU owns the state of Louisiana.

You never know till you try. Only in retrospect is it obvious that guys like Richrod were doomed to fail. At the time him and Charlie and Butch were all splash hires. That is all any program can do.
