Help me out here: Why are UT fans obsessed with Gruden?

Does he have some kind of connection to UT? He's been out of coaching for almost 10 years, and has never coached meaningfully at the college level. That doesn't exactly lead to a feeling that he would do well at UT, or even that he would be decent. Why would he even be seriously interested in a college coaching job when it seems like his career is going in a totally different direction?
I'm not intending this as a troll of UT (unnecessary right now) but just realistically don't have any idea why they seem to obsess over this guy. The chances of him coming seem remote. The chances of him succeeding seem even more so.

A) Their fan base makes LSUs look competent.
B) Gruden was an assistant or grad assistant around 1990 at UTe

Because we almost hired Schiano, after hiring Butch and prior hiring Dooley
Gruden is a home run for us

A GA for one season in 1986. I assumed that wasn't the connection. He spent more time at Southeast Missouri State.

He began his coaching career at Tenn. His wife is from Tenn and a Tenn grad. I think his son is currently a student there.

He's a name.
He left coaching at a relatively young age for the broadcast booth and with time, has achieved mythical status.
I have a strong hunch that if anybody were ever able to lure him back to the sidelines, they'd be sorely disappointed with the actual results on the field. He's been away from the game too long.

Their fan base is a disaster.

So would Belichick and Saban. Gruden like those 2 will never coach at UT.

Pretty strong words from someone that's about to lose their coach to Texas A&M

Wouldn't upset me if A&M overpays for Jimbo.
The FSU job is a top 5-10 gig.
