Feels like having your HC not be the XO's guy would be an advantage...

I realize at some programs the HC also serves as the OC or the DC but does that mean that's the best solution? If the HC is not the XO's guy and therefor can spend more time on the insane number of other tasks a HC has to deal with like recruiting...couldn't that be an advantage? Whats the point of having an OC or a DC if the HC is doing double-duty anyway?

It's also more difficult to change HC's. Often the entire staff turns over, recruiting classes scramble, both sides of the ball have to learn new scheme's resulting in that "We'll get em' in season 2" mentality. I'd much rather deal w/ finding a new coordinator every few years than a HC.

In any case, it just feels like the meltdown is pre-mature.

Best case scenario to look at is Dabo Swinney

It's a disadvantage because coordinators leave, and if the guy in charge isn't specializing in something then he's got to get the perfect hire, every time.

Is Saban hires a bad DC, it's OK, because he's a savant and can work around it. If O hires a bad DC, well, we suck on defense until the guy is fired.

Yea why would you want someone like Nick Saban, Urban Meyer or Jim Harbaugh?

Seems like Coach O's specialty (dline) got worse once he took over

You know Sean Payton has never been coordinator either BTW. And he hasn't been good in a while

I wouldn't really consider Pete and XO guy, but other than that great list.

I would also point out Jason Garret who's Cowboys are rolling despite losing Tony Romo.

You want a hc that can at least lock down one side of the ball regardless of coordinator

Now we are dependent upon both hires

And coordinators seem to leave quicker now

This sucks

Oh and it's more of a crapshoot trying to get the right OC IMO which is why I wish we'd hire an offensive coach

Not invalidating that what they're doing. But it doesn't mean it's the only way to run a program. Charlie Weiss wasn't successful as a HC but is a good coordinator.
