re: Do we even interview coaches anymore? Or just race to reset the market?

I don’t believe that’s how we’re operating. We’re going after the biggest fish for the biggest money again because he’s who the hottest name is.
You are overthinking this.
Think back to 2021. There is only one coach who was considered a target for LSU in that cycle who has been successful, and that’s Kiffin. Stoops, Riley and Dabo are still employed, but Riley isn’t earning his salary, Stoop’s buyout is the only reason he still has a job, and Dabo’s past glory is propping him up at this point. Jimbo is long gone and Napier was a total flop. Remember Mel Tucker?
It wouldn’t have mattered if anyone from LSU “sat across from” any of the coaches in that cycle. It sucked across the board. This cycle looks very similar right now. Take the guy we in hindsight should have hired in 2021.

It’s a knee jerk reaction. It’s definitely not a sustainable model. However, the people who are interviewing have to have some idea of what they’re doing as well in the process

LSU has the power to hire an up and comer, completely change the trajectory of coaching pay in CFB with a more incentive based structure.
I don’t understand why we fired Woodward when we’re doing a copy/paste of throwing stupid money around at someone who hasn’t proved they can convert to long-term success.

And if you look at what all those coaches had in common: they were all considered “big names.”
I think that’s what people are concerned with. Why only look at those? None of them might be what you’re looking for. Expand your horizons, rather than being myopic.
Examples:
Kelly was a big name, although not one being floated about, because no one thought he would leave ND.
DeBoer and Elko weren’t hot names for big coaching vacancies yet, but probably would become ones. Alabama and Texas A&M did their homework and seemingly struck gold. Same with Georgia when they hired their coach a few years earlier who was just a coordinator.
Point is, casting a wider net is worth it, if only to widen the pool of candidates. If the best one is a big name, so be it. But don’t be lazy and limit yourself.

When you are a top program now, you just find the biggest fish out there and shoot your shot.
Back when LSU was struggling in the 1990s, they knew they had to convince people to come here. Now they assume every coach would fall over themselves at the chance to come here.
It’s the arrogance most of these programs have now.
Woodward, especially, ruined this because he was a lazy POS who didn’t actually do work. He just offered up ridiculous contracts to top coaches that no one else in their right mind would.
He was not some savant. He was a politician just using other people’s money like toilet paper.
Then, in the end, you got guys who weren’t hungry, just fat cats that were satisfied with their payday.
Alleva was just an idiot with a complex. He hired O when he got spurned as a “we didn’t want you anyway to Tom Herman, this random oaf was who we actually wanted.”
The pride for both Woodward and Alleva cost this program even if O picked into a title.

Not being ran in this way would be an admission of defeat… the first rule of being big dogs is looking the part
