I am slowly, reluctantly starting to accept that it could be SOS as the next head coach at LSU. I don't think it's a sure thing, by any stretch, but I want to open a rational discussion about LSU fans reaction, our emotional responses, and the objective evaluation of him as a head coaching candidate for LSU. It's been polarizing, that's for sure. Those of us in the anti-Spurrier crowd are just reluctant to embrace a guy who is:

1.) A bigger arse than the last guy we had,
2.) More egotistical than the last guy we had,
3.) Old as hell,
4.) Classless as hell, and
5.) The architect of the most humiliating and uncalled for performance in TS, October 9th, 1993.

I don't deny that he can coach a team up. I argue that his time is past, but he was an excellent Offensive coordinator. He will need an exceptionally strong defensive coordinator, but can get by with a QB coach for the offense (so maybe we can affort a $650k to $750k DC). He is an adequate recruiter, within his areas (QBs, WRs) but doesn't like the process, so will need excellent recruiting assistants. He does recognize the need for a strong defense and allocates sufficient resources to defensive coaching, recruiting and philosophy. He tends to hire quality assistants, but fires them as scapegoats.

He often throws players under the bus. He loads up opposing teams with bulletin board material. He turns his QBs into basket cases (though in some instances basket cases with strong Heisman runs). He's very experimentalHe draws intense scrutiny from the NCAA. He publicly bashes officials, drawing further attention. He is an intensely negative recruiter (and this turns many Louisiana kids off).

He won a national championship at Florida and 6 SEC titles in 12 seasons. (Is it going to be good enough for the Rantards to only win 1 SEC title every 2 years, and 1 BCS Championship every 12?)

He has not replicated anything like his Florida success anywhere else, and hasn't noticeably improved South Carolina over what Holtz was able to build.

Might be his biggest advantage over Les.

this could be tied with "overrated" as the most over/incorrectly used term to define a sports player or coach in the sports talk radio/message board world today

No discussion, he will be next LSU coach. Hopefully we can get Muschamp and promise him the HC job in 4-5 years.

He wouldn't come if we asked him. Move along, there's nothing to see here.

But classless coaches/teams/players don't win. Re; Patriots

Bingo! The scenario I would love. Let the Ole Ball Coach groom Will to take over when he retires.

good as long as I'm not on the receiving end.

Honestly, I think the guy will make a great coach here. He's not afraid to completely hand the defense off to someone else, he knows the importance of a stout D, and he fricking knows how to run an offense and coach a QB.

My only real reservation is that I think the nature of offense in college football is changing, and I'm skeptical as to his willingness to see the future and embrace it. Otherwise, bring him on.

They've never caught him in anything major. But, because he's such an in-your-face arse, they would love to catch him in something. They are always looking for anything to pin on him. The WVMD is currently in that category, too, for that matter. That's why if a recruit sneezes and either one of them says "God Bless You!" (and this is true of other coaches as well, Fulmer for example), there's a letter from the NCAA to the school's AD before the echo from the sneeze fades.

Bring him in... Now!

Saban was the biggest prick we will ever have as coach.

The man wins.

I love Les and don't want him to leave. I really don't but this would be an upgrade at the HC position.

Who cares how old the guy is? Things change so fast now youth is no guarantee.

why in the hell would anyone want to promise someone a head coaching job in 4-5 years getting no such commitment from that person?

you have no idea what the state of the program will be like in 5 years and promising the job to anyone just isn't smart

i think spurriers age and questions about longevity may hurt him....will it cost him the job i don't know

i can't see how the current admin will want to leave this decision up to a new AD and go through this process again in just a couple of years and with every year that passes, it gets harder and harder for spurrier to recruit

i think his best days are behind him and i think we can find someone who may be on par with him now, but not starting (or already on) his descent

I can imagine McCray wouldn't be too happy with this hiring.

so is miles for his shite-talking towards the pac10 , if you wanna use your line of logic

and yet he has never been accused of anything, even from fulmer

hell like 2/3 of his hatred of fulmer is b/c fulmer is a cheat and does things the wrong way

McCray will be sad to see Pelini leave unless the new guy moves him to Linebacker.
