doesn’t make sense that many of our other “targets” got extensions or are heading elsewhere without the LSU job being filled.
Especially Napier. I would bet you money Napier's agent made a last minute call to lsu last night after all the Riley stuff came out. Yet today he is still expected to be at UF. Maybe it was an ultimatum of hire him now or he goes to UF and LSU didn't want to commit or maybe it's because we already have someone.
It was also reported Napier's agent reached out to LSU a few nights ago and was not getting any love back from the LSU side. Everyone including me thought that meant Riley but maybe it's someone else

Starting to seem more and more like someone whose team is in a championship game (Aranda, BoB, etc) or an NFL hire.

Aranda
Maybe. I sure hope so.
But the last 2 weeks, followed by the last 24 hours, should have opened all our eyes to the fact that we know nothing, and we're not going to know anything until Woodward announces his man.

Maybe so. I just don’t think Woodward is dumb enough to let himself get Alleva’d. He wouldn’t rely solely on a verbal commitment from Riley only to be left scrambling
I think at some point we have to accept that no matter how good or prepared Woodward is, he still has to deal with the same headwinds that every other AD faces during a coaching search.
Top flight coaches don’t sign contracts mid-season while they are still competing for a championship. And to be honest, I don’t think we should want any coach that is willing to do that.
1. It’s a distraction and these coaches are still preparing for games. That’s why the agents negotiate with the school midyear.
2. If they sign a contract they have to notify their current employer, which leads to leaks and a huge distraction for the team.
So if you’re going to pursue a guy who is still playing for a conference title/playoff berth, you aren’t going to get more than a verbal commitment. At that point your options are to wait it out or hire someone else. If Riley was truly the guy Woodward wanted, and if he truly showed interest, then there’s not a lot Woodward can do other than try to hedge as best he can.
To use a blackjack analogy: Saying Woodward “wouldn’t rely solely on a verbal commitment only to be left scrambling” is like saying he “wouldn’t stay against a 6 if the dealer has a 4 underneath.” Sometimes you just have to play the hand to the best of your ability, no matter who you are.
