quote:I really don’t think he wants to be a head coach. Also he said in an interview he’s seen assistant coach after assistant coach leave really good jobs and schools to take head coaching jobs and basically ruin their careers after it doesn’t work out. He doesn’t want to be one of them.
What’s the deal with Venables.

Typically, it takes a long time for coordinators without HC experience to get a P5 head coach job unless they get an in-house promotion. It took Kirby eight years as DC for Saban to finally get a good Power 5 HC job
You must mean it takes that long to get a top job. Not like he couldn't have had a job like Wake Forest or Illinois.

What do you guys think about Scott?

quote:I honestly thought if Dabo were to leave he’d be the guy. He’s been a Tiger since 1999. The Clemson fan base loves him. He was our top recruiter and was a huge part of Clemson’s success. It’s going to be weird without him. He’s staying for the CFP though so hopefully he’ll be sent off with a bang.

I think Venables is more likely the unofficial "coach in waiting" which is why in part I think he hasn't left.

We'll miss him, for sure. He's a tireless, on-top-of-everything recruiter; recruited Florida for us. Good evaluator of talent. Adaptable in building an offensive identity & scheme around the talent & playmakers on hand. As a game-planner & play-caller it's really impossible to consider him apart from Tony Elliott, but it's hard to argue with the results. Also it's a little different from the defensive side under Venables in that Dabo is much more involved with in-game decisions on the offensive side. Honestly, IMO their play-calling has been better than Chad Morris's.
All in all a solid hire for USF & a great opportunity for Coach Scott.

Great coach and even better man. Honest and as fair as they come, which makes him a great recruiter. Great at evaluating talent, great offensive mind, great pedigree, all the boxes check here.

Compared to a staff like Saban where he's seemingly replacing coordinators every year.

Thanks, sounds like he’s a Dabo starter kit, with maybe a little more offensive pedigree? Any idea if you think he will call plays now that he’s on his own?

No idea how that will work, tbh. That might depend on the coaches he can bring in & particularly who will be his OC. My guess is probably not. If he really is aiming to do it the Dabo way, then probably he'll hand off the play-calling duties but still have alot of input. After all, calling plays is just one aspect of how coaches manage a game, albeit the most visible & thus subject to second-guessing.
