The "schematic advantage" is looking great right now....this is what happens when you give a guy a huge extension for losing a game

I seriously hope they keep him though. Beating Fat Charlie is more enjoyable than beating Willingham ever was.

weis has shown a mediocre (or downright shitty) job of developing the talent he recruits

Agreed.
Even w/ my purple and gold glasses, I'll admit no team has the national following ND does. To not be in the top 25 most of the time is an epic failure for a team on TV every week. Also, as they keep losing and playing weaker schedules, that advantage may dry up (in 15yrs) as well. Boston College is the most successful Catholic College in the past 10+ years , if they get a nat champ or two, ND may take a real hit.

I think Weiss made that trash(Quinn) in to stars. Which in turn made guys like Samardzja into legit stars.

but still, it was a combination of 4-5 players?

overall, on both sides of the ball

he got the most out of those players like Willingham couldnt.

also led to ND's demise..especially on defense.

they suck?

i think thats a little strong. They were 3-9 last year.

they have been in every game except 1.

which was the 17-0 loss this past weekend. And thats really not even a "bad" loss.

as far as recruiting, he was hired after hte 2004 season...sometime in December if i remember right.

Didnt exactly get a full year worth of recruiting

they showed they could be competive when they had a QB(Quinn). Clausen is still only a SOPH and has had a pretty great year for a SOPH QB.

I have a feeling his development goes a lot like Quinns'. They'll have a pretty formidable offense next year

CFB is such a QB oriented game. Esp at a school like ND who historically had good offensives. Hard to win with young/sucky QBs

The problem is that they are ND. They get Nat TV exposure every game. To be 8-4 on a good year is a horrible failure there. Weise has admittedly played a weaker schedule (dropped LSU series) and has had a worse record. They are not as good as Boston College over the past 10 years.
Weiss is a failure- they will NEVER win a MNC w/ him- that is their goal. Sure he may even get to a 10 win season, but they wont be in the NAt title picture w/ him there.

also, how much does he make for being an average (i'm being very generous) coach? 30-40 million over 10 years. One of the top 5-10 coaches in salary- bottom quartet of quality.

ND fans state that he is a real ND fan and would take less for the good of the program if needed, I think that is a fantasy.

Yeah no kidding.

The question is: nobody has really won there since Lou Holtz - Charlie Weis is a little better than Bob Davie and Ty Willingham, but not by much (Charlie has .032 more wins).

Who can they get that will actually turn that program around?

It shouldn't be that hard. They have a relentless fanbase, nearly unlimited recources (due to not having to share recources with conference teams), and national exposure courtesy of NBC.

You could take any of the coaches in the SEC, make them the ND coach, and they would do a better job than Charlie Weiss has done

ND has the #5 (06), #8(07), #9(08), and, as of now #7(09) recruiting classes at ND *(per ESPN LINK) This is amazing considering how "average" they are.
The earlier poster is correct: 2/3 of the SEC coaches could compete for a MNC their every year w/ that national pool of recruits.
Goes to show just how poor he is at X and O's- and at player development.
