What other incentive was there to pay the buyout in full other than having their guy in the bag?

The fact that you didn’t have an leverage to fire him for cause.

But why was the decision imminent especially right before Kiffin was scheduled to announce his decision

If he plans to get another job coaching in the next year or two then smart thing would be to negotiate down to a lump sum 30 million. Otherwise you go somewhere else making say 8 million a year starting next year then you only get 2 million a year which is less than half

No coincidence on the timing

Not going to trial and having discovery. Neither side wanted that.
There was never going to be any firing Kelly for cause. Woodward leaked that to try and get Kelly to take a much lower buyout. This was him trying to save his arse, which didn’t work. Once he was pushed out, BK getting his buyout was inevitable, but they had to go though the official process that Woodward didn’t bother with.
I’m pretty sure BK and his lawyer called the bluff and filed suit after Woody stepped down/ was pushed out, but it was just a matter of time before they made everything official and paid him the full amount.
