The fact that Orgeron flamed out shows you just how overrated "fit" is. Now, the HC does need some guys on staff who can connect with the HS landscape in the main recruiting region (which Kelly seems to have figured out with his latest round of hires).

LSU's last 4 HCs:

West Virginia native who had never coached in any significant capacity south of the Mason-Dixon line prior to coming to LSU

Quirky Ohio native who had essentially been a Michigan/Oklahoma guy most of his career prior to LSU.

Coonass from Lafource Parish that could only be understood by people from Louisiana

Massachusetts native who spent almost all of his career coaching in the "Great Lakes" region.

Rank the coaches in that group. I would bet most would have the "best fit" last

The person that fits is the person that wins consistently. When that happens, an Eskimo will fit in

We have to remember these journos have never hired anyone to do anything. They have no idea how the most rudimentary hiring process works for any organization even as small as a snowball stand. They have no idea if "fit" matters, or how much it matters.

Therefore when you see articles about who might be the next coach for X job, just remember they are pulling these names straight out of their anuses. Any of us could list ten candidates for Michigan, and have a high probability of being right.
