What does the overall program have to do with what type of offense a team runs?

IMO this offense will get you to a certain point but not 13-0. Again, by firing Tubbs, Auburn is saying they want more (again, i think that's unrealistic).

Why not?

ETA: What offenses regularly get teams to 13-0 in the SEC?

I'd like to know this also.

I hope he said the "defense is just too strong."......

Georgia would agree....

or...."too many athletes...."

Miami would agree.....

do you realize the transistion between a pro-style offense and a triple offense a team would have to go through to get where GT is at right now? Do you know anything about what Paul Johnson has done in the past? Where's he's been? His accomplishments? What he did at Navy? Something no coach could do in 40+ years? Seriously?

Yes, Yes and yes. I know all about him.....This is a silly argument. You disagree with my opinion and that's fine. But please don't be a condescending prick and assume my opinion is uniformed just because a lot of posters here are clueless.

then don't be such a homer when you're trying to have a serious discussion. Are you serious with that? This offense wouldn't work in the SEC? Same people said the same thing about Meyer's offense before he took the job.

Johnson's offense is more of a "big play" offense than Meyer's. To say "it wouldn't work in the SEC" is absurd. That's ranter speak, seriously.

I think the wishbone (and please let's not argue over whether or not they run the classic wishbone), is an equalizer. By that I mean it is useful for teams that have smaller offensive lines, for instance (much like the spread). Can a team go 13-0 with it? Sure. But I think any program that can go 13-0 running that offense would likely have an easier time getting there via another route.... Fall behind big and coming back becomes difficult (and yes I watched the UGA)Tech game)....Man, I feel like I'm on trial here trying to justify my opinion to you two.

Huh? What are you talking about? I'm far from an SEC homer. That's why included the ACC in my earlier statement.....I'm at work and can't answer all of your point by point statements....I never said Urban Meyer's offense wouldn't work in the SEC. But, that offense (not just UF's version) is more conducive to passing, clearly, than the ga southern, navy and ga tech offenses.

I'm not trying to put you on trial but some things are evident about Georgia Tech and Paul Johnson.

1. Georgia Tech enrollment in much like Vandy, their quality of recruitment don't match that of say Florida, Miami, LSU, Alabama, etc. This would be a better position for Auburn because Johnson would have some unbelievable talent to choose from at Auburn. Kodi Burns would fit pretty good and still give them a better passing threat than Johnson has ever had.

2. Paul Johnson. He's won everywhere he has gone and everyone has always said the same thing about his offense. It won't work here. See Urban Meyer's spread and the Georgia game.

3. The wishbone is power football. The best years for Tommy has been power football. It might be different styles but power running can work in the SEC. Bama has shown that this year. If Johnson pulls in a good DC, they would be in business.

Link I don't disagree with anything you just said. Auburn would get better players. IMO, there would still be a few games a year that they run into teams that are able to slow the run game way down. Unlike the spread though, it's much harder to transition into the passing game from the wishbone....I remember the early 80's when Emory Bellard at Miss St was running the wishbone and 'Bama was still running it. There came a point when the rest of the conference sort of caught on. In the case of Miss St it brought them to a certain point (they beat lsu a lot in the early 80's including some good lsu teams), but they weren't winning the conference.....Auburn is a better job than Miss st, granted. He would do well. But back to my original post on the subject, which i stand by, Auburn is clearly saying they want better than they had. Tubbs was 13-0, 4 years ago. They were a play away from winning the west last year and tied for the west 2 years ago. IMO Paul Johnson wouldn't do much better (if at all).

That's not really going out on a limb though. Paul Johnson WILL infuse a passing game in that offense. I've seen him do it. At Navy, he didn't have the QB to do so. Not sure if GT has the WR's to do so.

Look, we disagree on how successful he'd be at Auburn. I think he'd do well, but not BCS title well.....Again, don't assume every one that disagrees with you is an ill informed ranter. I've never been an SEC or LSU homer, but you just assumed I was. I was never one that said Urban Meyer's offense wouldn't work in the SEC, yet it was assumed I probably had......I could just as easily assume that some people are smitten with the Ga Tech offense because they're not real familiar with it and it's a novelty to them. I'll assume that's not the case with you, but I'm sure they're some idiots who only saw the UGA and Miami-Ga Tech games and now think Paul Johnson would go undefeated with better talent.

that was only after the obligatory "that offense will never work in the SEC."

It's funny how fans of other schools in the ACC were saying the same thing about Johnson before the season started.

I couldn't help but laugh the entire time I was watching them play Miami.

But I never said this. I said win BIG. Bigger than Tubbs (who did go 13-0).

I'm partial to Paul Johnson...but Auburn will have a tough time convincing anyone that they've upgraded from Tubberville.

You need to get off that number. Yes he did it and has nothing to show for it. It sucks but that's the way it is.

Well, I would, but clearly the people calling the shots at Auburn are delusional. I happen to think Tubby is an excellent coach, but undefeated seasons at Auburn, or anywhere for that matter, are very rare. My whole entry into this thread had to do with the fact that I seriously doubt they get an uprgrade at head coach....Anyone can argue over which who's a better coach, coach A or coach B. But Tubberville has done some pretty good things over there.
