ASU Search - Cautiously Optimistic on Herm Smoke Screen

I know, I know...I'm probably way off here, and Herm will get hired, but there are so many things that don't make sense here.
1. If this was Anderson's guy, then he had to have had this in his mind for quite some time, and Herm should have had some sort of interaction with Dr. Crow (ASU Pres) before now. Also, if Anderson felt so strongly, then why hasn't Crow met with Edwards yet...why has the meeting taken so long to happen?
2. I still maintain that this is career suicide for Anderson if he makes this hire. It will ultimately fail, and probably in a big way as he's already outlined fairly lofty goals for the program...and then you bring in Herm Edwards? The frick?
3. It's odd that Anderson had said that he was not going to speak about the search, yet I guess he had no problem with Herm having diarrhea of the mouth and openly talking about it on ESPN.
Could Anderson have been using Herm as a mouthpiece to get ASU talked about on ESPN more than normal considering the big openings they were up against? Is there someone else that ASU is waiting to finish-up, but Anderson was trying to keep the ASU name being talked about (though it's not like it was good)? Herm and Anderson are close, and Herm has nothing to lose here if ASU winds-up offering this to someone else - Herm still looks relevant outside of ESPN, and he gets to keep his job at ESPN.
I don't know...
I know ASU is not a blue-blood, but we have a decent history, good recruiting pool, a beautiful new renovation to football op's and Sun Devil Stadium, and a large alumni base...the pieces are there to get someone good, but that someone should not be Herm Edwards.
For your troubles, here are a couple of ASU chicks on a boat:

It is weird that after it was reported he was interviewing for the job he was still on ESPN doing his normal work for days. Just go do it.

Anyway, I could see this being true to a degree, I just think it's gone on too long to be a true smokescreen at this point. Theres a pretty big hole in your logic; after so many days/weeks of Herm supposedly being "their man" and it being so out in the open it would start to scare off other potential candidates, or the real candidates in your scenario.
Why would I take my time - as a busy college coach - to throw my name into the hat and go out of my way to interview when they're publicly all but married to Edwards? Coaches have egos, and while they interview all the time for jobs where they might be the 2nd or 3rd option it's rarely THIS out in the open that they would be the backup plan or backup-backup plan.
I could see your scenario being true if their AD approached his friend and asked him to play along for the first couple days to make the job seem more attractive than it is and like the AD is shooting for big names, just not sure it would last this long.

You missed my point - I think there's essentially someone that they've already targeted, but he's still coaching, so they're keeping it quiet. But, instead of being buried in regards to being talked about (see Nebraska), Anderson is keeping ASU being talked about by using Herm, which could be helpful for recruiting.
BTW, Mike Norvell was at ASU from 12-15, and finishes his regular season today.

I heard on the radio that Anderson was once Herm's agent.

Yes, that is correct...they also have a couple of other mutual friends (David Shaw being one).

It was brought up on ESPN one day this week. Herm didnt try to deny it, and just said he still had to do the official interview, and for the time being he would be on ESPN.
