Son (12 yrs) is very interested, as we took him to the D-Day museum last year and he asks to watch and read what he can on the topic.

Battle of Britain by Quentin Reynolds (I am 95% sure that is the correct author) It is an old historical fiction book (I think, never looked into it) but it holds true to the spirit of that period of the war when Britain was getting bombed. It was my absolute favorite book growing up, not sure if it would be difficult to find these days.
I remember another good one about the search for and the sinking of the Bismarck.

I was about his age when my parents started letting me read non-fiction works like Band of Brothers or The Simple Sounds of Freedom, which are both great.
However, there’s a young adult historical fiction book that I remember loving as a kid, called Soldier X, that I will recommend to anyone.

American Heritage had a Junior Library of books that I enjoyed in Middle School (the 70s!). Carrier War in the Pacific, D-Day, Battle of the Bulge, Air War vs. Hitler's Germany. Some of them are still out there, but not cheap.
If he's an advanced reader then Band of Brothers or Citizen Soldiers are great.
Also check the YA section at Barnes & Noble. I came across an interesting book there: Unlikely Warrior by Georg Rauch. Memoir by a Jewish kid who somehow ended up in the German Army.

When mine was about that age head read WWII for Dummies and loved it.
It’s a great overview.

If he wants some fiction, The Machine Gunners stuck with me when I read it about that age.
