I've got a Harper's magazine from the early 1860's because it has a picture (hand drawn) of the battle of Port Hudson that I was interested in. The whole magazine is interesting since it came out during the civil war.

I collected 1st edition early 20th century poetry books for a while. I like poetry and I thought that poetry would be an affordable niche for which to get first editions. And it was...until I tried to move to the big boys like Wallace Stevens, then it was out of my league (still much cheaper than novels).
I have some published in the 2nd decade of the 20th century.

I have Vol. II of The Gumbo, the LSU yearbook from 1901.
