I have heard great things but never read anything by McCarthy. Would you recommend it over his other books.? Also are you familiar with any of the other books I listed?

I have read a ton of McCarthy, and am currently in the middle of his border trilogy. The Road was the first one I read, and is a great intro into McCarthy.

A Thousand Splendid Suns was good, not as good as the Kite Runner.
I hated The Road. Maybe it's because my son was the same age as the son in the book when I read it and I found it terribly depressing.
The Five People You Meet in Heaven was pretentious tripe. You'd be better of watching a Hallmark movie.

The Road - loved.
The curious incident - loved.
One hundred years - sorta liked.
A thousand splendid - liked but - as was stated - not as good as The Kite Runner.
Five people - haven’t read.

The Road is a bit of a downer but one hell of a page turner imo. Think I read the entire thing in a day

I've read 3 of those.
I'd rank The Road and The Curious Incident Of the Dog In the Night Time about the same. One is just depressing(The Road) while the other is a little more lighthearted. So just depends on your mood. I'd recommend both though.
I'd skip The Five People You Meet In Heaven. It's not horrible, but just kinda hokey. But it is a quick and easy read, so not hard to knock out.

Thanks for all the replies. I have some others on my reading list I will add to the post this evening to get more opinions. One is all the light we can not see. I think I recall you mentioning it Spleen or was that someone else?

In order of the ones I've read:
- The Road
- One Hundred Years of Solitude
- The Five People you Meet in Heaven
The first two are great books that I would read again.
I've not read the other two of your recs. I may get to the Curious Incident...sometime.

I have mentioned it. Probably in my top 5 books I've ever read, but there may be some recency bias. I read it earlier this year. Still a fantastic book.

Do you by chance order from Thrift Books? I am finding a lot of these titles in hardcover in "very good" condition for under five dollars.

I have before, but I've gone to reading mostly on my Kindle since getting a Paperwhite. I check Amazon every day for their Daily Deals. I bought All the Light for like $3 that way. I also keep a reading list on my phone notes, and check Amazon fairly regularly for those titles and usually find at least one marked down, a few of them for free.

I will have to check that out.

Blood Meridian by him is probably the best book I have ever read. I am thinking of reading The Road next.
ETA: I decided to go with No Country For Old Men, one of my favorite movies and I have heard the book is even better.

All the Light Is great. My daughter’s favorite book by far. We spent a couple of days in Saint-Malo in 2019 - the setting of one of the storylines. Very special time for us which brings the book closer to us all.

Pretty disappointing that 100 Years of solitude hasn’t received much love in this thread

Curious incident is the easiest to read. I’d go there first.

I just finished The Road and it pissed me off. They had it made half way through. Why would they leave?
