Thoughts on The Alchemist?

I've seen this book recommended a bunch over the years (not necessarily here, but in book circles). I just finished a really beautifully written book called When Breath Becomes Air and wanted to read something that would be similarly impactful so I started reading The Alchemist.
This book seems to be written on a third grade reading level. Yes, it tells a story, but so does the Three Little Pigs. I understand that simplicity may be intentional, but I expected more literary depth from a book so often described as a modern classic. I'll probably finish it to see what all the fanfare is about, but I'm underwhelmed so far.

I know it's a massive bestseller, but it left zero impression on me. The only detail I actually remember is that the main guy was a shepherd.

I always thought The Archer was Paulo Coelhos best work.

It was very short and still not worth the time it took to get through.
Poorly written with little value or meaning.

Thanks. I’m going to abandon it. What a disappointment.

I'm a big fan of Paulo Coelho but The Alchemist just wasn't that great. Eleven Minutes is much better.
