Just finished the show. How are the books?

I only watched the first season of the show, which follows the first book very closely, except for the introduction of a character who doesn't appear until the second book.
The books are great. I have mixed feelings on the ending of the series though.

I'm actually reading them and watching the show for the first time right now. Just started book 6 of 9, and I've seen through season 5 of the show, I'm making sure to stay ahead in the books.
I was going to say almost this exactly, and season 2 and the first half of season 3 are pretty faithful as well, and the changes they do make are understandable for TV.
But then they stuff all of book 3 into the last half of season 3 and have to rush the plot, and that's when they apparently said frick it and start changing stuff from the book just for the sake of changing stuff.
Objectively it's still a good show. But coming directly from the books to the show, it's just glaring how every change the show made from that point on weakened and diluted the story and the characters.
So far I 10/10 would recommend reading the books, or listening to the audiobooks
