Kinda crazy to me, the series hits it's stride in a big way starting with book 10, particularly in terms of ramping up the overall plot. Outside of Ghost Story and Peace Talks I think books 10 through 17 are fantastic. Books 8, 13, and 16 are the only ones after book 3 I would consider mediocre in the series. The series pretty much takes off with book 7 (my personal favorite of the series).

Hmm, weird choice.
Based on how the first 4 Malazan books have gone (all I've read so far), this may be weird, but it is no way surprising.

My surprise was more due to him not having Karsa front and center more due to his last book being a huge flop and his publisher not letting him finish that series (and forcing him to start the Karsa series instead). Not including Karsa is a weird choice in that regard

Fair enough. Not surprised I'm on an island with Dresden Files. I tend to look at urban fantasy series much differently than other series. Especially the longer ongoing ones. Little things start to bug me and add up over the course of the series, and I end up losing interest. That said, I maintain there are some really bad plot choices in the later Butcher books, and the nonsensical romantic cliche choice pretty much dooms it for me.
On another note, just picked up the 6th (and I think final) book of the Song of the Shattered Sands series by Bradley P. Beaulieu so I'll be starting the series in the next day or two. Hopefully it turns out to be a good read.

Good list.
Probably in my top ten all time are
Lightbringer and powder mage.
I'm finishing up cradle book 9 now. Never read a scifi like this before but I like it. I feel like I'm watching a cartoon or power rangers sometimes though it funny, will wight did well imo.
Something I have not seen mentioned and is one of my all time favorite is dies the fire by sm sterling this is one of my favorites, first few book are the best. It makes me check my SHTF plan a few times a year.

I actually can easily understand just not digging the urban fantasy long term, he just has really improved as a writer over time, so was weird to me to hear someone say they got worse as they went along.
Can't really go into further without spoilers, but it's not as cliche as you think on the relationship angle as of the last book (although maybe a different form of cliche, but when you've read as much as we have it's hard to avoid something that doesn't seem sort of old hat honestly).

That series is like crack for me, I love Wight. And yeah, it's like a kickass fantasy anime hybrid, but so well done, awesome and hilarious, particularly after Dross gets added as a character.

Check out "dies the fire" by sm sterling. One of my favorite books mainly bc I wonder what I would do.
Its centered in modern time but like God gets mad at world or something and changes periodic table or something so guns don't work gas doesn't light, hydro works but not as it should. So whole world is thrown back in time by about 300-400years over night.
Very good book. There are a few holes in the story and the author seems to think he is a song writer, but at least the first book is amazing. (I liked then all)

Is it just me or does every modern fantasy novel have a female protagonist?
Posted on 7/27/21 at 6:59 pm to AUCom96
I’ve noticed most of the newer works make it a point to check some boxes..

Just finished The Blade Itself first book I’ve read from Abercrombie super impressed, have been hesitant because of the grim dark tag but guess I’m a fan. Cannot wait to get into Before They Are Hanged.

As in one of many or just the only one?
There are tons of modern series with male protagonists.
Maybe you just hit a recent run of series with female protagonists. Also a lot more female fantasy authors probably gives a wider dispersion.

Yeah still plenty of lead male characters in regular fantasy. I will say urban fantasy is overrun with the main female wiseass character. Also young adult fantasy is pretty saturated with main female characters and "box checking" overall.

I’m jealous that you are reading this for the first time. i’ve listened to all of Abercrombie’s works a few times now and can’t get enough. The blade itself didn’t start or finish strong, but sets the foundation for the rest of the books in the series. Abercrombie is a master of subverting expectations in a good way.

If the books only get better from here I’m in for a treat. I feel the same way when someone mentions they are reading one of Sanderson’s Cosmere series for the first time jealous to relive that experience so I will try to fully appreciate my fortunate position.

Halfway through Oathbringer here after finishing mistborn original trilogy and Wax and Wayne
. Got wife to start mistborn after she finished Wheel and liked Sando’s writing in the last 3 books.

I've not successfully gotten my spouse to try Sanderson's work.
I have almost finished all of the powder mage trilogy. I've loved it and only started it because of the recommendations made here. Are the side stories worth it?

The second powder mage trilogy is better than the first, and the shirt story that goes with that one is good. There are two short stories involving Taniel that are quite good that go with the first trilogy, otherwise the rest are average.

I just read the fifth season book one of broken earth... I'm going to buy the second book and finish the series see if it gets better. Book did disappoint. Some of the posters on here were recommending some of my favorite books ever and this popped up. Different writing style, just never really got me excited and pumped about the next page. The ending does make me want to see if books get better.
