I am deciding between Mediations by Marcus Aurelius and Provocations by Kierkegaard. Just looking for feedback on the 2...

Kierkegaard - a religious man that poked much fun at Christianity and does so with great wit. I haven't read Aurelius, though I own that book.

I have never read Provocations. I would be surprised if it is as accessible as the Mediations. Marcus Aurelius is plain spoken, direct and generally clear. The material was was written largely for himself. It provides a good entree into the stoics. I recommend the book not necessarily the philosophy it sets forth.

How long is meditations? Just curious, I’ll read either way, I just know some of the greats, especially the Russian authors like Tolstoy and Dostoyevsky, are long as hell!lol

250 pages of so. Marcus Arelius wasn’t Russian. He was a second century Roman emperor.

Got it. I was confused. Very straightforward in some ways. Not a slog.

Was looking for something as similar to the Prince as something could be with a little more moral high ground. Like I originally said, plan on reading both Meditations and Kierkegaard Provocations, but if Aurelius is only 250 pages I’ll knock that one out first.

You should check out Art of War and The Book of Five Rings, as well.

This would be like asking do you want Chinese food or italian food. They are very different.

I personally would go with Kierkegaard if you haven't read him. He is referenced in much of modern thought. I haven't read provocations though, or maybe I did in school and I forgot it. THe one most people read is Fear and Trembling. It pretty much lays out the basis for existentialism. You see many of those things in modern pop culture. Its not an easy read though.
