I'm currently about halfway through House of Chains (4th book). It had been quite a while since I read 3rd book when I started this one, and I had no idea what the heck was going on at the start. Finally getting into it and am starting to become rather engrossed in the story once again.
I tend to jump around to different books which certainly doesn't help with these. SO many story lines going on that it can be difficult to keep up at times.

Have you gotten to Tehol and Bugg yet? Can't remember when they're introduced.
Best duo in the series.

Doesn't ring a bell, so I don't think I have
I'll have to keep an eye out for them

I think they first come in around Midnight Tides - definitely some of my favorite characters.

Anyone read all the book is the Malazan Universe?
I think here is around 20. The 10 in Book of the Fallen and another 10 or so with a couple of trilogies set in the same world.
Are those any good?

I've read all of them but the two Kharkanas books. Esslemont has a different style, but he also fills in a lot of the backstory Erickson doesn't touch like the Crimson Guard and the Seguleh.
If you enjoy the main series you should definitely read them.

I've read them all. The Esslemont books are soild with the best of his books that follow along with the main series being about middle of the pack compared to the best of the Erikson Malazan books. Though the last two books (Path to Ascendancy trilogy) Esslemont wrote that are a prequel to the main series are fantastic, and as good as anything Erikson has put out. Esslemont's books pretty much have improved with everyone he has put out.
I would skip the Kharkanas books by Erikson, the first was decent but the second one was flat out terrible (to the point his publishers made him jump to writing his next trilogy before he's allowed to finish that one).
The Bauchelain and Broach books by Erikson are great too.

Thread Update/Bump
Stuck with reading and glad I did. Nearing the end of the 4th book "House of Chains". Characters and opposing alliances are still confusing.
Favorite character by far is Karsa Orlong. Dude just seems like an ultimate BA.

Nice, Books 2 and 3 are my two favorites, Book 5 is also a really, really good one.
Book 5 starts another section of the story, new characters, etc. Its almost a 3 book trilogy within the overall story along with books 6 and 7, but it ties in with characters / storylines you have seen in the latter two if memory serves correct.
So, if you aren't ready to tackles another 3 books, Book 4 is a good intermission point to read some other stuff if you feel like it.

I enjoy the series so far and like to read for an hour before I go to sleep. I'm going to stick with this series until I read all the related books.

Ya, its my favorite series but can be a bit of a tough / slow read. It helped me to read some easier stuff interspersed at a couple points and come back to it with fresh eyes.

What’s that he wrote in the author’s note of the tenth book?
“What’s half a trillion words between friends?”
Yeah, the books/series are long but it’s such a good read. Well worth the payoff. Some of my favorite characters don’t even get introduced until the fifth book. You know the ones. Their dialogue is pure gold.

They are fantastic. I think T might be my favorite character in the series.

Last weekend, a couple friends that I recommended this too were around, one finished and one through midnight tides.
But went through all the incredible characters in this series, T&B, karsa, whiskey jack and most of the malazan - especially quick ben - kruppe, red mask and so many others. It's insane how many great characters and story lines run through the books

Love the series so far.
Completed first 3 books. Each one so far I like more then the last.
But after each book I feel I need a break to digest what I just read.
Will probably start House of Chains next month.

I am about 40% of the way through Deadhouse Gates. I have been reading it for about a year. I don't dislike it but I find that I almost always choose to do something else besides read. Then I will read some and like it ok but I just don't love it.

My second read through of this series was the best fantasy reading experience I have ever had. Everything makes so much more sense and you pick up on so much other stuff it is like reading a new series.

Deadhouse gates is my favorite of the series, I'd push through and see if it grabs you in the 2nd half of the story - if it doesn't you can probably stop reading as the series probably just isn't you kind of story.
Did you read Gardens of the Moon? Or just started with Deadhouse Gates?

I can definitely see this as true. Three books in and I’m still not entirely clear in a few things, but I like it a lot.

Gardens of the moon in particular gets so much better on reread after you've read to at least book 5 or so.
