So my son and I are watching Rebels and are in the middle of season 2. I know that Thrawn will show up as the villain later and was thinking about checking out the books. I know there are 2 separate trilogies and that some are no longer canon. Which trilogy should I go with and should I wait until after I finish Rebels or would knowing more about him make me enjoy it more?

Fwiw I have never read a Star Wars book outside of maybe a novelization of the original trilogy 30 years ago.

The newer ones are the canon books now. I only read the first in the new series, though.

That one takes place before you see Thrawn in "Rebels," though.

The original Thrawn trilogy, before Disney wiped it out as cannon, consists of Heir to the Empire, Dark Force Rising, and The Last Command.

These are the books that introduced Thrawn. I haven't read the new books.

I've read all six. The non canon ones are really great and need to be read. The second series is good as well, but the first is more well regarded.

I've read both the original Thrawn series and the newer three. The original "Legends / non-canon" ones are far superior imo.

The first and third books of the new series were good (especially the first one), but the 2nd was annoying, included too much Anakin and Padme garbage for my liking.

Of course it's far superior as the story includes Luke, Han, Leia, Lando, Mara Jade etc and was the launching point for a ton of Legends books.

While the newer Thrawn series isn't as good; it is still good and entertaining. I'm a big fan of Vanto and the Chiss in general so I'm happy to see more about them.

There is already a second Thrawn canon trilogy about his early rise in the Chiss. The first book (Chaos Rising) came out a few months ago and the next book is due later this year.
