Do you dissect books you're reading?

Do you look for symbolism, irony, etc. or do you just take the book at face value and enjoy the storytelling?

Not really - I'm not going to be lecturing about Dean Koontz at a community college in a room full of teenagers that don't give a shite, so I'm just looking for entertainment from the mystery/horror genre.
Someone tell that to Stephen King, who feels the need to whine about politics in every novel now.

Depends on the book, the author and my mood.
Generally I just want a good entertaining story. But if if I know the story is metaphorical or allegorical then yes I will try to decipher the deeper meaning.

At the heart of fiction is truth.

I do not. I read for entertainment and escape.

The library gets mad at me when I dissect their books

The first time through, no. If it leaves an impression then almost certainly I'll go through it again later. No Country for Old Men is one I've dissected a number of times. Infinite Jest too. Currently dissecting Underworld. But usually I just read for fun.

With three kids I’m lucky to make it 6 pages without drifting off at night lol.
