ETA: it is a particularly useful term to differentiate between the many different Aegons in the books. There is only one fAegon.
Or you could call him Aegon VI

I've bounced back on forth on this, but on the reread I'm seeing some things differently. I've always believed that Aegon was fake. The story of the black iron dragon head that washed up on the Quiet Isle looking red is hard to ignore. But there are other things. I'm now on board with the theory that Aegon is Illyrio's son by Serra, or at least his step-son and Serra's bastard. I think it is the former. In the Tyrion chapter when Ilyrio takes Tyrion to the Shy Maid, Illyrio says "there's a gift for the boy, candied ginger, he always liked that" and it says that he looked oddly sad. Illyrio clearly has an emotional bond to this boy and regrets not being able to be with him. The other thing that I missed the first time that I read ADWD was that when Tyrion sees Young Griff for the first time, he thinks that the boy looks 15 or 16, or close enough to make no difference. The real Aegon should be about 18. I think that's a clue that while he isn't the real Aegon, he's close enough to pass.

I think he's Serra and Ilyrio's kid, and Varys is his uncle. Varys introduced his sister Serra to Ilyrio when they became friends, and they had Aegon. Serra makes Varys promise to put her son on the throne and restore their familylegacy on her death bed, kind of a foil to Jon/Ned/Lyanna.
I also believe Varys was cut b/c he was a Blackfyre, never bought into the other story.
That theory puts a whole lot more tension/importance on the Varys & Ned scenes in the dungeon. Imagine if Ned had actually gave Varys the letter revealing Jon's parents.

Dany's vision in the House of Undying is one of the biggest things pointing to fake Aegon as well, with the cloth dragon swaying over cheering crowds.

That's right, forgot about that one, but it really did stand out.
I can also get behind the Varys as Aegon's uncle angle.
I had a hard time reconciling why Illyrio would support Viserys and Dany if he was trying to place his son on the Iron Throne and someone pointed out that Illyrio didn't actually think that Dany's eggs would hatch or that she would even survive life with Khal Drogo. I thought that last part was a stretch until the reread and Illyrio says point blank that he did not expect Dany to survive. When I read that the first time, it didn't mean anything because we hadn't been introduced to Aegon at that point. A lot of these little nuggets take on far greater meaning when you reread them knowing the full context of the story to date.

Why would Varys tell Kevan Lannister (right before murdering him) that he had switched Aegon at birth and was plotting to restore the Targaryens to the Iron Throne? Did he suspect that someone was listening in and didn't want to spoil his own plans? Is it possible that even he is mistaken and genuinely thinks he is helping out Aegon?

He never says anything about switching them at birth. He just tells him that "Aegon is here". Hell, he doesn't even acknowledge that they are referring to the same Aegon.

Varys as Aegon's uncle angle
When the Lords or Maesters don't state their last names that is what always makes me wonder. You never know whose/what side they're on.
Varys says something to that affect to Oberyn in the show even though he's talking about not being a Lord, he says it's "just Varys."

I know some hate the Blackfyre theory, but I'm kinda hoping it is the case. Unfortunately I'm not sure how they are going to apply this into the show considering Robert's Rebellion has barely been touched on, though this is where Bloodraven could play a significant role in addition to teaching Bran.
Illyrio's qoute: "Some contracts are writ in ink, and some in blood. I say no more." lends more credence to this as Bittersteel's goal was to put his half-brother and his heirs on the throne.
I think the Dany/Aegon factor will either reconcile the two sides of the family or finally decide which will sit the throne.

Quaithe tells Dany to beware of the perfumed seneschal. There are several candidates as well as a ship, but I think she means Varys. She also says not to trust, well, pretty much any of the people heading to Slaver's Bay (the Lion, the Griffin, the Kraken, the "Mummer's Dragon"). I don't think things work out with Dany and Aegon.
Quaithe also told her that she must pass beneath the shadow, so I'm pretty convinced that Dany is heading to Valyria next, not Westeros.
