Best historical prelude to the American Civil War?
Want to give my 14 year old a book to read that explains as realistically as possible the historical economic and political climate leading up to separation of the states.

Recommendations?

If he is up for it, I’d recommend battle cry of freedom.

It sets it up, goes through the war, and some aftermath in one volume.

If you’re looking for a book written for a younger person, there are some good ones, but they’re probably going to simplify things more than you’re looking for.

This probably isnt what you are looking, that sort of thing seems kind of intricate for a 14 year old imo but im not sure what is out there, but Rifles for Watie is great historical fiction for that age about the civil war and may get him interested for more.

Its been a while since ive read it and it may be for a younger age as well so maybe check that out first

Battle Cry of Freedom goes into great detail regarding the economic and political circumstances leading up to the Civil War.

The Shaara trilogy (Gods and Generals, The Killer Angels & The Last Full Measure) is historical fiction but could provide a good foundation for further exploration of the Civil War.

Battle Cry of Freedom is the best single-volume history of the Civil War and goes into pretty good detail about the general build up to the Civil War, particularly when it comes to historical, economic and political tensions. It's a dense read, however, and might not be to a 14-year-old's liking.

It's a little heavy, but Ashworth's Republic in Crisis: 1848 - 1861 is almost zeroed in on point.

He does focus on slavery as a central cause (which of course, it simultaneously/paradoxically IS and IS NOT the driving cause of the conflict).

For balance, former UL-M professor, Sam Mitcham's It Wasn't About Slavery: Exposing the Great Lie of the Civil War, obviously, takes the opposite position.

Both books are well researched and, despite the contradictory stances, well supported.

This is a pointless reply since I can't recall the author or title, but I once read a fascinating book about the year 1860, dealing with both the Presidential campaign and the prelude to war. Sorry I don't remember what it was.
