This keeps showing up as recommended for me. Wondering if it's any good.

Dark, violent, a little slow at first, and a protagonist that takes a while to start relating to, or even liking.

The "setting" is the most fascinating part, but I can't say too much about that without spoiling.

It's good, not great. And gets better each book, IMO.

I read the first one and really did not like it.

There are some interesting things about the fantasy world it takes place in but I won’t spoil it.

I just did not like the characters and felt it was just over the top violent, almost to the point that it was cartoonish. Never even bothered to read the second book.

That said, it’s been highly recommended here and I’ve liked most things I’ve picked up from this board. It’s a fairly easy read so might as well give t a shot and see for yourself.

I've read them all and they get pretty repetitive. They are violent and dark, but nothing to write home about. I much preferred Peter Brett's Demon Cycle for a similar type read.

Alternatively, if you want a good fantasy series with a long developing hero directly tied to actual Earth and haven't read Jim Butcher's Codex Alera series, its a really, really good read.

It was awesome. Don’t listen to the skeptics. Jorg is a great character, a dark anti-Hero you can’t help but root for. Books are easy reads, hard to put down. Lawrence’s next series in the same universe, The Red Queen’s War, was great too but I missed Jorg.

Mark Lawrence is very good if you are looking for gritty books in the mold of Joe Abercrombie. The Broken Empire books would basically be if you mixed Joe Abercrombie with the old cartoon Thundarr the barbarian setting.

The Jorg trilogy I think is very good, humorous and dark. I could see some having issues with it since the main character can be a bit of a douche, particularly at first, but the story is very good and the setting and world is extremely interesting.

The second trilogy set in the same world is very good too, and has far more likeable protagonists.

They're recommended for a reason. Mark Lawrence is one of the best grimdark authors going. I've read all his stuff several times.

You will either like the main character and like the series or hate it. I liked it and the audiobook is good.

Thanks to everyone for the feedback.

Guess I'll give it a shot.
