Anyone else do this while reading?

If an author mentions a specific location (street, business, restaurant, etc.), I sometimes go to Google Maps and place myself there. I know part of reading is using your mind and imagination, but I find it interesting to actually see where the characters are in the book. Granted, I read on an iPad (Roast me, don’t care. I love it.), so Google Maps is easy to get to.
Examples: In his recent book, The Dark Hours, Michael Connelly mentions one of the busiest intersections in L.A.. I don’t remember the streets, but it was cool to ‘visit’ there. And I just finished a book on drug cartels that referred to some of the deadliest neighborhoods in the world (Mexico, Columbia). You can actually ‘walk around’ in those places. It adds a new dimension to the book.

Yep. I wear out Google Maps in general. News stories, books, movies, etc. - any mention of streets or sites I'm not familiar with already, I'll go look it up on Google Maps.

Yeah, especially historical fiction. I'll Google photos of castles, towers, buildings in general, maps of battlefields, bios on historical figures.

I’ve been doing this with War & Peace

It really depends on the author's ability to transport me there. If the author goes into a lot of setting detail, I like to go for the ride. If it's a character running around NYC without much detail, I like to look it up.

Absolutely.

Me, too. I often go back and forth between the book and google to look up things I want to either know more about or just get a visual of an area. That's probably my favorite thing about reading on the ipad along with the ability to store hundreds/thousands of books.

Another thing I’ll do is like in the Bosch novels, where he’ll mention all those jazz guys like Frank Morgan, I’ll immediately get on YouTube and give it a listen
