I'm in the mood to learn about the largest land war in world history. What are some good books that do a good job of covering the conflict from Germany's initial invasion in June 1941, up until the fall of Berlin in May 1945?

I'm interested in the replies here as well. Eastern front is absolutely fascinating.

On a more localized scale, the Tigers are burning, is about the battle of prokhorovka/kursk (largest tank battle ever) told from the Russian side and I recommend it to anyone interested in such.

Dan Carlin has a 4 part Podcast on it - Ghosts of the Ostfront. So it's around 12 hours, and pretty good. It's not free but worth it.

Here's a good one. I read it many years ago.
Barbarossa

Also you really should read The Rise, and Fall of the Third Reich by William L. Shirer if you haven't read it. One of my favorite books, and was written not very long after the war so lots of info that was still first hand.

Hitler Moves East, vol. 1 of Hitler's War on Russia

Scorched Earth, vol 2 of Hitler's War on Russia

Paul Carell

These 2 books give a base line on the war from the German side, very good books written long ago. These books cover from the start until mid 1944; and the total collapse of the German front.

Here is a rule of thumb when thinking about the war in the East:

1st Germany not taking Moscow in 1941 meant Germany could not win the war.

2nd Germany losing at Stalingrad meant, there would be no peace between the Soviet Union and Germany.

3rd Germany losing at Kursk meant the Soviet Union would win the war.

I haven't read it yet, but this one is on my reading list. The Winter War fascinates me.

Ivan's War: Life and Death in the Red Army, 1939-1945 By Catherine Merridale. This is not an all-encompassing operational survey, but a book about real life in the Red Army and the psychology of the peasant citizen soldier. If you want to understand the conflict, this is a good one to have under your belt.
