Read this recently. I teach 9th grade and it was part of our curriculum.
Good book. I don't think I'd put it up there with the classics, but you could tell Ernest Gaines put his soul into this one. It also has enough literary devices and such to make it a good book for teaching.
Nice to see a good book by a local writer. I wonder if All The King's Men is ever taught in schools?

That one one of the most pointless books I have ever read. It was forced down my throat when I was younger, and I tried reading it again as an adult hoping age and perspective would change my opinion. It did not.

I had this book for several years and finally read it a few months ago and I wish I could get that time back
I hated it.

I thought it was well written. I didn't really expect it to be a hit with segments of TD, but it was a good read for me.
Some nice introspection by Gaines, solid literary devices, good invocation of time and place and good character development.
For me, anyway, it was better than Farenheit 451 which it replaced in our curriculum, although that one had some good teachable moments on writing craft, as well.
