The global dunking community took flight June 16–19 as Dunk Camp 2025 returned to the Salt Lake City area, bringing elite athletes, coaches, and future stars together for four days of vertical testing, technique training, and high-stakes dunk contests.

Hosted by Andy Nicholson, Dunk Camp drew participants from eight countries and featured contest divisions at 8-, 9-, and 10-foot rim heights. The highlight of Day Two was a World Dunk Association-sanctioned competition judged on flight, style, finish, and complexity

I thought vertical leap was measured from a stopped position - no run up allowed. And the measurement tool they used isn't what the combine uses. Still, very impressive by those guys - they're way up there.

It’s cause they get extra thigh muscles

Did you not see the white guy too? They don't have extra thigh muscles. Just living for hundreds of thousands of years in the Africa safari where lions, tigers, elephants, crocodiles, zebras, hyenas, wild dogs, rhinos, hippos, leopards, wildabeasts, baboons, will have a natural selection effect that only the fastest, strongest, and can jump the highest end up surviving to breed. That's the answer as to the "why".

It's not selective breeding in the US up to 1864 either. Most people who owned slaves had less than 4, so it wasn't enough to selectively breed only biggest males for the most part, in addition slave owners just wanted more bodies. Wanted as much reproduction as possible regardless of fitness status of the male/females.

White guy and 50" vertical is very impressive

There's an ongoing debate about whether or not a human being is capable of jumping and staying in the air for more than 1 second. Would be interesting.

I watched Michael Jordan take off from the free throw line, glide to the rim, throw down a dunk, then turn around in mid air, glide back to the same free throw line, stop on the way for a mocha latte, then come to rest gently. So yeah, humans can stay in the air for more than one second.
