Brian Kelly joined the SEC Coaches Teleconference Wednesday and was asked about LSU linebackers Omar Speights and Whit Weeks.

Speights, a senior transfer from Oregon State, suffered an injury vs Grambling that forced him to miss games vs. Mississippi State and Arkansas. While he was out, freshman Weeks filled in for him a played very well. Speights rotated back in over the last few weeks and will continue to get the start nod based on his experience, Kelly said.
quote:

“He’s a really solid run-fit defender,” Kelly said during the SEC coaches teleconference. “He is experienced and I think the thing that Whit brings is athleticism and he can flat out run. But there’s no substitute for experience and seeing plays the way Omar sees them. The way they need to be fit. So that’s the difference between the 2 linebackers right now. So we lean towards having a little bit more experience as Whit continues to grow and learn the position.”

He is the better LB right now! LSU fans love the new kid and have no idea why the vet is better

Speights has been hurt since the summer. He’s no bum and is just getting back healthy. Weeks will have his time when he can learn all of the defense. He said it himself that he has to lean on Penn to help line him up.

Because I think BK is competent I will have to believe that while Whitt Flashes more than Speights that Whit also exposes the defense by gambling too much or just not being in position and while Speights doesn't flash, he makes the defense as a whole better by being where he is supposed to be.

Experience doesn’t mean squat if you can’t make plays. Best way for a young player to develop is on the field.

Hey Brian, Ask Les Miles if not playing your best player will get you fired.

Weeks said he’s having to rely on Greg Penn to line him up. There’s a reason a now healthy Speights is in the lineup. He’d been injured since the summer.
