Rece Davis Questions If Sam Leavitt Can Avoid Costly Mistakes vs. Ole Miss

ESPN’s Rece Davis believes LSU quarterback Sam Leavitt’s ability to protect the football could be a major factor Saturday night against Ole Miss.

During an appearance on The Pat McAfee Show on Tuesday, Davis pointed to Leavitt’s three-interception performance against Louisiana Tech after an impressive season opener against Clemson.

“Sam Leavitt, as great as he was opening weekend when we saw him field level against Clemson, had some issues against Louisiana Tech,” Davis said. “He threw three interceptions, two of them in the red zone.”

Davis wondered whether Ole Miss will try to limit Leavitt’s effectiveness as a runner and force him to consistently win through the air.

“Can Ole Miss turn him into a passer and say, ‘You’re going to beat us time after time after time throwing the football. We’re going to make you make another play?’”

Davis acknowledged that Ole Miss has had issues stopping the run, but said Leavitt’s decision-making could ultimately be one of the biggest factors in the matchup.

“Is Sam Leavitt going to be able to stay away from the mistakes and beat them throwing? I think it’s a big deal,” Davis said. “Those interceptions against Louisiana Tech raised a little bit of an eyebrow for this weekend for me.”

LSU and Ole Miss will meet Saturday night in Oxford in a highly anticipated SEC matchup that also marks Lane Kiffin’s return to Ole Miss.
