LSU and offensive coordinator Matt Canada have officially parted ways after just one season together in Baton Rouge.

Head coach Ed Orgeron announced the news Friday night. Per LSUSports.net:
quote:

“I want to thank Matt for his contribution here at LSU and wish him and his family the best,” said Coach O. “We have mutually agreed to part ways and go in a different direction offensively but are always grateful for the time and effort Matt made here at LSU.”

Coach O said the offense made some improvements this season particularly in turnovers and introducing new schemes and concepts. However, he said the offense did not measure up to the standards he has set for LSU.

“As the head coach, you have to make tough decisions,” said Coach O. “I chose to go in a different direction in order to get where I believe we need to be as a program.”

Canada arrived at LSU as a Broyles Award finalist and highly sought after offensive coordinator with interest from top football programs across the country.

Coach O said he will immediately begin the process to find a new offensive coordinator.

“We will identify a coach with a wealth of experience who is totally committed to the vision of the program and has the drive to do whatever it takes to see it through,” said Coach O.

So LSU went from Les Miles to Ed Orgeron. Both are virtually the identical caliber.

Face it...Ed Ogeron is in NO WAY shape, manner or form a National Championship coach. LSU will NEVER be in the final NCAA game as long as this guy is "leading" LSU.

Until LSU has a Saban-level HEAD COACH, we will continue to be a 9-4 "also ran" team and will NEVER be in a National Championship game.

Lowest O production in 4 years. Not great talent? They were better than what he had at Pitt and looked lost until Coach O called that meeting.

The least mobile QB in LSU history - Steve Ensminger. Soon to be the worst OC in LSU history since Charlie Peavey - Steve Ensminger. Get ready O, your days are now numbered.

What a hypocrite. Coach O you lost a fan. One of your only ones by the looks of it. You're a hypocrite. You expect to be given time to get the team up to your standards but gave the offensive coordinator what 3 or 4 games? Now you shite can. Hypocrite.

I think most of us agree that the offense didn’t blow us away this year. In fact, it looked very similar to what we’ve had, with some pre-snap shifts added in. Canada didn’t do a bad job, but I think we all expected far more than what we got. I wish Matt well and I respect O’s decision to make the move in order for us to get to where we need to be. It was mutual, meaning Canada was not happy, either. So this is a good move both ways. Everyone must be on the same page in order to be successful! Best of luck to Matt, and thanks for being a Tiger!

There has to be more to it than what we will know. Either way here we are.

Why would Canada take less to leave? Did he do something wrong we don’t know about or is that just standard?

By taking a smaller buyout immediately, he can work next year and still get his new salary plus the LSU lump sum buyout. That's just my guess.

This new OC hire will seal O’s fate one way or the other...and set LSU down a path of success or mediocrity. I’m optimistic but I also believe in the “be careful what you wish for” mantra.

We need someone not in the coach O buddy system, Ensminger should he can't beat bama with the game he coached in 2016. I was so excited to see what Brennan could do with Canada's system. If he wants good offense check out some of the top big 12 teams OC's not someone from Kentucky or Ensminger, coach O needs to live up to his word and get the best assistant coaches in here. No buddies like Miles did, isn't that why we no longer have him here, say what you will Miles wouldn't have lost to Troy no matter who the OC was.

$1.5M a year Canada was getting!? I'd have done it for half!

We ran too much of the shifts and motions for me personally. We need a better offensive approach than that with the talent we have on our team. That shite canada does may work for a season vs sec opponents, but it won't continue to fool great defenses like we play, bc there are still tendencies even with the offense we ran this year. We need an attacking style of offense that is more wggressive than we had this year. I guarantee you that is what O is going after. We will have a good scoring offense to go along with our great defense. I respect O and his decision to move in another direction bc canadas system is for teams that don't have great talent like the teams he has been coaching before lsu. It's not an offense that a team with the talent we have should run. I agree with O.

You’re right. Jet sweeps and all the lateral movement is okay here and there. But ultimately, it’s about moving straight ahead in the SEC! You must be physical! A finesse offense won’t beat Alabama, and I think that’s what O saw during the Troy game. It’s really pretty simple. Run a smash mouth ground attack(like Les ran), and develop a passing game(like Les didn’t do.) Add in a dominant defense(Aranda), and hopefully a solid special teams unit, and this team will be right back in the mix this upcoming season. That really shouldn’t be very difficult, with the talent we have coming in. Plus, Brennan and Narcisse! These guys are going to be dynamite!

Man I like what orgeron is doing. He wants the best for this program. He is not playing around. He knows the talent and resources we have to work with and wants more than canada brought to LSU. If you think canada is a world beater, just look at the stats for LSU this season and where we match up nationally in the offensive rankings. While we may have been handcuffed a bit with etling at qb. We should still have better numbers than we did and o knows that.

“[Coach O] said the offense did not measure up to the standards he has set for LSU.” “...different direction in order to get where I believe we need to be as a program.“ Almost sounds O wanted even more improvement than Canada gave us. Either way, we are here now. Let’s go get the next great.

One thing that we know about coach O, he is not gonna let his offensive coordinator get him fired like Les Miles did.

If he promotes Ensminger then you might want to adjust your theory

steve would do exactly what o wants

Correct he is going to get himself fired for different reasons like bringing in an OC and then telling him how to run the offense.
