LSU’S STEVENS AND HAMPTON EARN SEC PLAYER OF THE WEEK HONORS
BATON ROUGE – A pair of LSU safeties – Jacoby Stevens and Mo Hampton – have been selected as Southeastern Conference Players of the Week for their performance in the 56-20 win over Arkansas on Saturday night in the Tiger Stadium, the league office announced on Monday.
Stevens earned SEC Defensive Player of the Week honors, while Hampton was picked as the SEC Freshman of the Week. The honor is the third of the year for Stevens, while Hampton was recognized for the first time. Earlier this season, Stevens earned SEC Defensive Player of the Week against Mississippi State.
Against the Razorbacks, Stevens set a career-high with 3.0 sacks and 4.0 tackles for loss in the win. He had a total of eight tackles as the Tigers held Arkansas to 304 total yards. Stevens’ sacks came on three consecutive Arkansas possessions to start the second half. His sacks went for losses of 7, 11 and 10 yards and resulted in Arkansas punts each time.
Stevens added a tackle for an 8-yard loss in the second quarter. In all, Stevens’ sacks and tackles for loss resulted in 34 yards in losses for Arkansas.
Stevens leads the Tigers in both tackles for loss (8.5) and sacks (5.0) and he’s second on the team in tackles (73). He also has two interceptions and seven passes defended to his credit.
Hampton, who started in place of All-America Grant Delpit in what was his first career start, had six tackles, one of which came on LSU’s first defensive play of the game. Hampton entered the contest with one tackle to his credit for the entire season.
Hampton, who also plays outfield on the LSU baseball team, had four tackles in the first half as the Tigers built a 28-6 halftime lead while holding the Razorbacks to only 100 total yards through the first two quarters.
