Former LSU offensive lineman and 9 time NFL Pro Bowler Alan Faneca ran his first marathon Sunday in 3:56:17. Faneca has lost more than 100 pounds since retiring from the NFL and began training for the New Orleans Rock ’n’ Roll Marathon back in October. Per RunnersWorld.com...

During his training, Faneca focused on running for time instead of distance and incorporated intervals and long runs in order to meet his goal of breaking 4 hours. He said his discipline from his football days helped keep him on track while training for the marathon.

“I was always very strict in my training, taking notes and writing things down,” he said. “I had something to lean on.”

He picked the New Orleans race because it’s close to his home just outside the city limits and his 8-year-old daughter Annabelle, and 2-year-old son Burton could go.
Faneca played at LSU from 1994 to 1997 and was a first round draft pick in 1998 for the Pittsburgh Steelers. He played for the New York Jets and Arizona Cardinals, earning nine-time All Pro and Pro Bowl selection as well as a Super Bowl ring with the Steelers in 2006.

Amazing that thin guy was once an ALL Pro offensive lineman.

This guy was a mauler at LSU and blocked for Kevin Faulk when LSU's ground and pound game was nearly unstoppable and LSU's program was just barely cracking elite status recognition. The most impressive thing was that after he left that same running game suffered noticeably. His absence was felt big time. It was no shock that he made 9 pro bowls IMO.

Now that I've read this article and seen that picture, my respect for that guy has totally skyrocketed. He must be one heck of a guy.

Roids? Really? Nothing about his body as an offensive lineman screams that he was on steroids. It's amazing what a diet can do. But people that don't have the drive always believe others take a short cut.
