LSU head coach Ed Orgeron held a Spring Preview press conference on Tuesday and spoke about the current competition at quarterback heading into practice.

Orgeron first started off by saying that the position is currently open but later added that returning starter Danny Etling is "clearly" the leader.
quote:

"We opened up the competition at the quarterback spot," Orgeron said. "Danny Etling has had an excellent offseason. He's been a leader and is working hard."

"Justin McMillan, Lindsey Scott, and Lowell Narcisse... he's rehabbing his knee, looking good, working good out there, and has lost a little weight. Myles Brennan is going to arrive in June."

"Those guys are going to be vying for the starting quarterback spot. It's going be fun to see those guys flourish under Matt Canada."
Orgeron was later asked why he thought it was important to come out and publicly say that the quarterback position is open?
quote:

"Danny is the leader, clearly right now, Orgeron said. "And probably could end up being the leader."

"I wanted to make it open for Justin, Lindsey, Lowell, and Myles. That what we told them when we recruited them. We want to give them a chance."

"Matt [Canada] is going to run his offense but he's going to be able to adapt to the type of quarterback we have. He's proven that throughout the years."

"We are still going to run the football this year with Derrius Guice and our running backs but we are going to open up the offense, throw it down the field, multiple shifts in the formations. That's what he [Matt Canada] is known for."
Orgeron also added some encouraging words regarding Lindsey Scott, who he said reminds him of Danny Etling.
quote:

"I think Lindsey is tremendous," Orgeron said. "He's very smart, he can run the ball, he's strong, and throws the ball well. He's going to be right up there in the competition."
LSU will begin spring practice this upcoming Saturday.

Regardless if Etling is the backup (which IMHO he will be the starter all season) LSU will have experience at the backup position when he'd be needed to come in and play. A he will play like a winner.

None of these competitions are "open" in every sense of that word. Surely you realize that coaches have seen these kids workout and practice for months. Then there are hours upon hours of film to watch and compare. Really, a good coach like Canada has a fair appraisal of relative abilities long before he sees the first snap. No doubt this figured in the conversations he no doubt had with Harris. So lighten up everybody, it's a real world.

GumboDave who are you the Grammar Police? And where you get rant from? It was an obvious observation of the team that I've loved all my life and I guess it wasn't to impossible to read because you, commented, on, it, so, you, had,to, read, it!

Danny Etling did some real good things last year but he didn't blow the doors off of anything but he was a real calming influence on the offense especially after the Brandon Harris fiasco. But one thing about Etling that really, really worry me, the Alabama game he was dreadful just horrible and that game was in Death Valley so just imagine next season the game is in Bama, now can he be trusted, well that's to be seen. I personally believe one of the youngsters should be giving an honest chance to start because unless Etling transform under Canada we know what he is and what he brings to the table. Now whoever out of Scott, McMillan or Narcisse take control of the position should start because last year a few SEC QBs proved that experience is a lil overrated and athleticism is much more important for an SEC QB especially against Alabama aggressive defense. I didn't include Brennan in because he really needs to hit the weight room hard and when he do it will be hard keeping him from under center. Now I've seen both Lindsay Scott and Lowell Narcisse in person and those kids are the real deal and if it's a real QB competition and they get Canada offense down there's no way one of them don't start because they're to athletically gifted. Next year against Alabama we need to shake things up we can't go in there with mediocre QB play not being able to complete 10, 20 yard pass plays not be able to convert a third and 5, after last year against Bama I just don't trust Etling but I will withhold my judgement because last he was worst than Brandon Harris against Alabama and like I said before that wasn't on the road. I think we should start the best youngster against Bama because they will go into that game with no fear and I don't think it'll be to big for them because they both QBed State Championship teams so they know a lil something about pressure. Well we'll have to see who takes control of the offense after spring practice and trust in Matt Canada that he will make the right and honest decision on who will lead us because it has a chance to be a very special season. GEAUX TIGERS!!!!!!!!!!PURPLEREIGN????????????

Agreed! Etling is a 5th year senior. We know what we are going to get and that's not enough to beat Alabama.

You used commas incorrectly multiple times throughout your terrible rant. You also used 'and' as well as 'but' too many times in one sentence. Your mistakes resulted in multiple run on sentences. This, along with your shite opinion, made the paragraph impossible to read.

A straightforward and comprehendable answer to preseason QB status??? Well that sure is refreshing.

I think, in the end, it will be Etling that gets the starting gig. Unless Scott just tears it up and they have no choice but to make him the starter. Which is a very real possibility. I just don't see McMillan making the jump over Etling or Scott. Etlings only real problem was lack of accuracy on the deep balls. The arm strength is there, accuracy isn't. He also lacked poise in the pocket during the Bama game. But that was the only game he seemed shook, alot of inaccuracies on the shot, intermediate, and deep balls.

A 300 lb d lineman illegally smashing his face mask into a defenseless players unprotected face tends to rattle people. These bama games have not been the best litmus because bama has beaten us with their whole team. Leonard didn't get any help any time we faced them and the helmet to the face shook Etling. he's still a tough kid and knows how to operate. He's an actual quarterback but people here talk about him like he's Andrew hatch. I pretty much agree with ur assessment. I like his intermediate game and touch when he isn't getting head butted by a DT.

Clearly, a QB with a full season of SEC experience has the upper hand. The other guys know that. Brennan even said he would probably redshirt. Scott and McMillan are good QB's and need to be ready in case of injury. However, either one could have a good spring and supplant Etling as the starter. Narcisse appears to still be injured. Maybe a redshirt for him as well. The good news is we have 5 QB's to choose from, and I'm confident Coach C will make the right choice. As of now, that choice is Etling. I think he will take the next step in this his Senior season. Much like Mettenberger did. No learning curve either. That's huge!

BH was smart not to fall for its a open QB race the writing was already on the wall, smart man to transfer out.
user avatar
tilthatday86 months
Harris transferred because he couldn't beat out Etling. Period. That's the handwriting and we all could read it. His open competition has been the last two seasons when the position was his to lose. And he lost it. So go cry in your beer.

I think the writing on the wall for BH was Lindsey Scott more than it was DE.

But I saw a 30 second teeny tiny grainy video of Lindsey Scott doing stuff and I want him to be the starter!!

None of Scott's films are grainy. They are all of good quality, and most of them are in the 10 to 12 minute range. The guy is the real deal.

Hopefully Noodle Arm can get us through a nice portion of the season in time for our main man Lindsay Scott Jr. to come in and wreck shite.
user avatar
Mouche33786 months
Noodle arm? Etling can deliver the ball down field. His accuracy is not there, but he can along it deep.

Deliver it deep (stupid autocorrect)

"Noodle Arm" is old. It wasn't funny mos ago and it's not funny now. In fact, it's insulting. IMHO, if you can't say something encouraging, just stay quiet.

I don't agree with promoting Etling as the notional starter. He's the coach, and I support him. But, this is the wrong time to say something like this. Etling is a man; he can take the competition. We already know that he's "the leader". We watched last year after all. I'm just saying let an open battle be an OPEN battle.

sure which is why you don't leave something like this open to interpretation.
user avatar
BayouBengal9986 months
First off he didn't promote anything or anyone. You know what he did? He said what all the level headed fans and all the players know, and that's the fact that Etling went thru the season with LSU, raised the level of competition of the offense, had and still has the confidence of his team to lead them into wins. So stfu with all this non sense. If anyone behind Etling proves to do the same with regards to running the offense while gaining the trust and confidence of the offense then also proves to be superior athletically at the QB position then that player will then take the starter roll. That's a pretty big hill to climb but if someone does that, it will be rewarded with the starters roll. Geez
