LSU head coach Ed Orgeron met with the media after practice on Tuesday and named senior passer Danny Etling as the teams starting quarterback for the season opener vs. BYU on September 2nd.

True freshman Myles Brennan will serve as the backup QB behind Etling, according to Orgeron.

I like it. Hopefully we won't truly need Brennan this year and he can get some meaningful game reps at the same time

This is how I see it. Etling starts and Myles comes in for clean up or at some point to take competive snaps but not because of necessity, per say. Then maybe at some point we do need him to throw the ball around a bit. May even need LN to come in around the GL or RZ for tougher opponents if it gets to that. We'll see but I'm pretty confident in all these guys. People saying Etling isn't a good QB are kidding themselves. Only real bad game he had was vs bama. If our OL and RBs had played up to standards in that game he would have performed better IMO. It was also his first time playing that team. This year will be a totally different Etling. GT

Agree with BayouBengal99. Etling should be much improved this year with Canada and back surgery. He is very cerebral, like Mauck and Flynn, and will utilize the talent around him. As far as playing bad against Bama, doesn't almost everyone? We just happen to play them more than anyone. But I truly believe we bust their arse this year in Tuscaloosa! BTW, don't rule out Narcisse coming in and running some option plays in some games, if necessary. It's worked in the past.

etling was throwing the ball at the ground and looked legit scared playing against bama. that was when he had time to throw.

I been saying it since Brennan said he was committed to LSU. Everyone called me crazy when I said don't be surprised if he is the starter week 1. Etling is a serviceable starter. Not great, but pretty dam good. Given the talent he is surrounded by and the offense that Canada has installed, he should flourish and LSU has a real shot at being in the college football playoffs. Do I think Brennan is a better QB than Etling? Absolutely! But Etling has the experience of playing in the SEC and Brennan can become more comfortable in Canada's system and become the starter next year. So I see Coach O's reasoning and I am totally behind it.

Spot on, Mouche. And Brennan and Narcisse will get reps in the tune up games to gain some experience. Both will benefit from not being rushed to play out of necessity the way Harris, Jennings, Lee, etc... were under Miles. Experience is so important against SEC teams. Etling has it. Plus, he's healthy now, and has a competent OC! Should be a great season!

Justin is not out of it yet....That is the most insincere thing O has said in this whole thing. The writing is on the wall.....O is gonna swim or drown with brennan. If I was macmillan or Lowell,,,,,I would move on.

Ageed. It's clear who O is riding with. Not sure if it's all O Canada and feels differently or if it's all O and all Canada. Either way decision was made last year and was never going to change. I doubt JM evers sees the field. Hell he's only been mentioned once in the last 2 months. He should be the next transfer if he desires a starting opportunity. Next it's LN. Barring injury, his chances of winning over the coaches for a starting role is 0. He and MB are in the same class and it's obvious who will start for the next 4 years depending on if MB redshirts or not. LN will have to redshirt and will have 1 year to play 4 years from now. Can't see him sticking around. We will have to replace those 2 with QB's in 2018 and 2019. Unless LN is forced into a game and wins over coaches and fans this year, it won't happen. Time for LN to move on if he wants to start more than 1 year.

HA! Coach O could be starting Dan Marino and people like ready4something would gripe about it. If you think McMillan is our next best option, then you don't have high expectations for this team. Coach O is damned if he does, damned if he doesn't. He makes the choice to eliminate doubt about our starting QB heading into the opener and people still find something to bitch about.
