During his post-practice press conference on Thursday, head coach Brian Kelly was asked about defensive back Sage Ryan who is cross-training at cornerback and safety.
quote:

“We’re cross-training him,” Kelly said. “Certainly, he played corner for us last year, as you know."

"We wanted the entire spring to be safety and now, we’re going to begin that cross-training. We feel like he’ll become that one player that can play both positions for us.”
Kelly was also asked about freshman cornerback PJ Woodland.
quote:

"We like PJ and his competitiveness," Kelly said.

"With young players, we're looking for consistency. He has a huge upside and is going to be a really good player in the SEC. But in the SEC, you make one play, and they're going to go right back at you, and they're going to test you."

"We have to test the mettle of our young players, and we need to see consistency of performance. It will be about his consistency, Ashton Stamps' consistency, Sage's, or whoever we roll out there."

Well, he's not a starter obviously. If you have 2 positions, you don't have one.

Cross training. Could start either position. We don’t have depth in secondary his duplicity is critical.

He played out of position last year because we had no corners

I understand that but if he was going to be a starting corner a few weeks from now, you'd think BK would say that and not that he's training at both spots.
