I guess I like way more unique vehicles than this. I'm lucky to find what I want at all, much less being able to find one at each dealership. I paid over sticker on my truck, but I got exactly what I wanted. To me if I'm paying for the vehicle for 5 years and driving it twice that long what does $700 or so matter int he long run? I flew 1400 miles to get the wife's car, paid asking for that as well. That was one glorious ride back home.

Super happy with both 'deals'.

I never buy a car with my wife in tow. She falls in love with vehicles and it shows so the salesman act like MSRP is the real deal price. Buying a car is a huge pain in the arse but trying several dealerships and being patient is an effective way to get to a fair price in my experience.

I seriously doubt that post is accurate. Dealers make more than they let on, but not $20k on a single automobile

You'd be surprised at what they actually make.

I think it varies greatly depending on the vehicle

That's just the thing, it's not just the vehicle. It's the time of month, time of the year, incentives (rebates) available, proximity to dealer quota bonuses, and probably several other things as well.

You could walk in on the 1st of March and not be able to budge them more than a couple $1k off of MSRP, or go back at the end of November and the same exact vehicle will be advertised $10k off msrp, nevermind what you actually pay for it.

If you want to hear from their own mouths the lengths salesmen and managers will go to meet their individual and dealership quotas, listen to the This American Life podcast episode 513. It is a damned good episode. LINK

quote:

129 Cars Dec 13, 2013

We spend a month at a Jeep dealership on Long Island as they try to make their monthly sales goal: 129 cars. If they make it, they'll get a huge bonus from the manufacturer, possibly as high as $85,000 — enough to put them in the black for the month. If they don't make it, it'll be the second month in a row. So they pull out all the stops.

They do "lose" money on some cars, but it is done to get that bigger monthly or quarterly nut from the manufacturer that comes with meeting a quota.

quote:

The last day of the month continues and the truism is accurate: some people get great deals because it’s the end of the month and they have to hit their goal. When you look at the numbers, the average car they sell in the last two days actually loses money.

How do people so frequently misuse "sell" for "sale"?

I'm sure I would be, but I still don't think they make 250% margin.

Last December we were shopping for a Impala LTZ. I'm in the BR area so I naturally shopped here first. Not one dealer here would come off very much from the sticker. Offering only a meager discount that Chevrolet gave for loyalty buyers. I remembered that several TD posters in the past mentioned driving to Houston for better deals. I called up Mac Haik Chevrolet, and found they were offering 4 LTZs in which GM offered a $7700 instant rebate. Needless to say I bought the car sight unseen over the phone, and with a fair trade in on our car. The salesman Randy Haddox was great. He's actually the first car salesman that I would do business with again, and I've purchased many cars over my lifetime.

So true car was off by 1700 dollars and you are saying it's the real deal?

I've bought my last 4 vehicles for below truecar excellent pricing. A few of them well below it. I don't think it's that useful because of that.

I use comps and multiple websites to compare prices. Be prepared going in and they don't have much they can use against you. I bought a used Tundra from Team Toyota (great people by the way), they were a little high on their price ~31000 for Certified 2012 2wd Crewmax with leather, TSS package and backup camera. Got a comp out of Lake Charles for 26000 with no leather but similar vehicle. Team didn't want to deal that low. Offered 29k. I just kept to my plan and told them flat out I'll do 26,500 and not a penny more because we can't do the payments any higher (I had a spreadsheet showing every scenario on payments, they couldn't hassle me through that avenue). They offered 27500 and I replied that I don't want to put you (Team) in the hole on this and I know you have to feed your families just like we have to feed ours so if you can't make 26500 happen, we have to leave but it was a pleasure and thank you for your patience and effort with us. They caved and gave us the deal and have been awesome ever since.

I am a frugal SOB so I literally did months of research. Looked at multiple dealerships regularly and watched prices and incentives. I think my main advantage was walking away when I didn't have the price I wanted.

Also the Will Cover thread from the Money Board has some great advice to help with negotiations.

This is my issue as well. I want a certain color, certain options, etc.

I've seen some licks made on used stuff, but nothing like that on a new unit.

Once you factor the bonus, they don't really "lose" money.

You would average out all the sales, and in each case, you'd make money.

Yes, on an individual transaction basis, they may sell a vehicle (possibly) for less than they paid, but obviously, no business can do this on the reg.

I've given up with my community dealers. I've gone to Houston for last few cars. They know if you walk away, they will never see you again. I just am unsure about numbers. This truck is gonna be high. I'll need every towing feature they make.

If you paid even close to MSRP, which you admit, they took you to the cleaners, but if you are happy that is all that matters. Your paying full price allows the rest of us to get better deals. I guess thanks is in order.
