I had to fight and fight and fight to get the damn dealer to look throughout his area (TX, LA, MS) to find what I wanted...came down to me putting down a $500 deposit and KEEP telling that fricker no when he'd call with shite I didn't want. You're not going to find it...I can give you deal...So I had to carry my arse to another dealer in Alabama, 2 hrs away, and start the whole fricking process again. With absolute morons may I add...What's wrong with this one, let me show you this one...look dude I already searched your inventory online and you don't have what I want...find it for me. $500, multiple calls on vehicles that had sorts of shite I didn't want...He even went so far as making me prove I had the money to buy a vehicle because he didn't want to look. One Friday, bam he finds it, a hundred miles or so away from him in FL...I tell him I want to buy it and I'm on my way...he says hold on we have to trade these guys one of our vehicles...call you next week...the next Friday I show up before the vehicle is there and go through the paperwork...they offer to sell me all sorts of upkeep shite I don't want, because damn the place is far as frick from me. Guy shows up right around 5 pm and they scrape the sticker from the other dealer off and give me my truck.

My other vehicle was worse, I flew 1400 miles to get it and drive it back. I was watching the price of that vehicle, and I knew they were going to update it again with a lower price, it was used and could track the price over time...they employed an agency to price vehicles...when it was where I was comfortable I had the bank email them a copy of the check made out to them for that specific vehicle. They picked me up from the airport in New Jersey.

Once I had to prove my income to them to look, I find another dealer.

Really depends on the market for the year make and model of the vehicle.

On average, I'd say the actual "real money" that a dealer marks up a used vehicle is 4-5k.

shite, at least they did the deal for me. The one I flew 1400 miles for was a BMW and they told me to frick off at the 'local' dealer. I went on the BMW NA site and found through their CPO search feature (which was a PITA since they incorrectly categorized vehicles as manuals when they weren't) the car I wanted. They just laughed and said no, but they would find me one off of ebay or through the classifieds and CPO it themselves. I was on my own in that whole transaction.

I would have done the Toyota that way if I could have searched their system well enough. I bet I could have gotten a deal on that one had I known it was there.

I work a small town Ford lot. My numbers are well above average for this area and I'm the number 1 salesman all time at this dealership. I earn constant repeat and referral business. Want to know how? I never lie to a customer. Truecar is a sham. We have to pay them $300-400 for each truecar deal we sell. Want to know where that money comes from? Out of your pocket. An earlier poster talked about the bait and switch tactic. A lot of times, the truecar app will generate a dummy email saying we have the exact car you're looking for available when we don't. It's another sale tactic that costs both of us money.
