The Mrs. wanted a 2016 Explorer. Found one at the local dealership. (no trade in). They wanted to sell at Plan X discount pricing through my employer. $750 over invoice. True Car said $500 under invoice was the "good price". The sales manager basically called me a dumb arse and went on how True Car was unrealistic. Moved to another dealer 65 miles away with a similar vehicle. Deal in principle over the price at True Car Value pricing. At the end they wanted another $500 for a credit we "didn't qualify for". I went shopping and found an even better a little further away. Bought the vehicle sight un seen since we knew we wanted the vehicle in the color/options ect. We get the vehicle $2200 under invoice and pay $80 for it to be delivered from the dealership 145 miles away. The price we paid was below True Car Value "exceptional". Never doubt True Car. It is spot on IMO.

This is why people hate buying cars.

Yep.. The second dealer said "he absolutely couldn't make the original deal work because they would lose money". Yet when I was working on the deal for the vehicle we eventually bought he had a change of heart and said he would do the deal, deliver the vehicle and take a picture smiling in front of the vehicle (Never understood that part). My response....."That would have worked yesterday".

They are all immoral. The vehicle we eventually got for a great deal came with tremendous pressure to buy an extended warranty. I declined. They all have an angle.

Just having something to call out their BS is golden. Didn't check cargurus. Good information.

Just knowing invoice and what others were paying was powerful. BTW both vehicles we tried to buy are still for sale

So did you buy from a true car dealer or just use their price to negotiate the price you wanted? I'm really not looking forward to buying a new truck in the future.

Look into your heart and honestly respond. Have you NEVER been a dumb arse?

So even this blind hog of a sales manager did find an acorn.

I'm happy you got a good deal.

Good luck with your Grand Cherokee II.

Not a slam. They are really close in dimensions and styling.

One thing I used to enjoy was haggling over the price. I NEVER bought on the first day that I spoke with them. I find now, they are unwilling to haggle. If people would stop buying new cars, the price would eventually have to come down. It's crazy what a new car cost today and it's only going to get worse.

When it first started, it was great.

Then the dealers got on their arse for being too accurate and now it's just another tout service.

Like Carfax, it is occasionally accurate, sometimes.

Glad you had a good experience, but this is absolutely not always the case.

I always love the "we're losing money" line. Invoice price is a joke, it's artificially inflated by holdback. The fact you got it 2200 under invoice is probably very close to their actual cost, although I'm sure there were some rebates...fret not, the "poor poor dealership" still made some money.

I look at the size of land a dealership takes p in a populated area, look at the recently renovated buildings, all the salesmen, all the commercials on TV and the radio ads, etc and ask myself are they losing money on almost every sell...

Read this online looking up holdbacks for my Dad in the market for an Avalon Hybrid:

After reading this post i went to Consumer Reports and paid $15.00 thats right fifteen dollars US and got a print out of exactly how much a dealer paid for a certain car. I was in the market for a Jeep Liberty, Dealer sticker Price was $28,650.00 so after I conveyed the Vin # of the Liberty I was looking at and called Consumer Reports and told them the Vin # and the dealership where I had planned to make my purchase they informed me that this Vin # was purchased by my dealer for $8,756.00 now why is it that Consumer reports can give the True Value of that car but Edmunds cannot?..It is also true that they do have Hold Backs..they also have Dealer Incentives, ect. ect. ect. from talking with consumer reports here is how they understand it to work. Say my dealership tells the factory that
1). We can sell 100 Liberties for xx,xxx.xx and well buy an extra 20 Liberties at a discounted price for x,xxx.xx here is where the Dealer Incentives kick in. They are actualy rewarded by the manufacturer IF they sell the extra 20 Liberties before year end.
2). After they have sold 120 Liberties for that model year their Incentives for the next year start to kick in. Now for this year the Manufacturer says hey you sold 120 modles last year how bout we give you 150 Liberties this year for X,XXX.XX each and we will remove the hold back and give you 6 options for each of the 150 models at no cost to you. Meanwhile the cunsomer is Ignorant and doesnt know any better that the dealers who move 200-300 cars a year actualy get a reduced price from the auto manufaturers.
That is why it is SOO important to educate yourself and join any and ALL clubs that realy do work like Consumer Reports, Wholesalers Clubs and the like. Dealerships are like any other company in the world. If you think for one minute that the dealerships are only making 500-600 bucks on every car in their lot, then why do they have 10-20 salesmen per dealership? Its hogwash. They mark their product up just like any other company.

I seriously doubt that post is accurate. Dealers make more than they let on, but not $20k on a single automobile

I think it varies depending on the vehicle. Truecar has the Silverado at 8k over what I paid for it
