You can, but it does usually have a little back and forth. If you go in with invoice costs, dealer holdback, advertising fees, they know that you know the cost of the vehicle. It makes things a lot easier.

How so? You were trying to make the point if you were buying a specialized vehicle you have to pay more, I didn't dispute that.

I make a flat commission on new cars. Not a lot of money made on them. We usually try to make at least a $500 profit on new. Used is where the money is. Also, were a certified Truecar dealer. I've taken the certification courses and I'll be the first to say it's almost a sham. I can go in and adjust the price that you receive in the offer and show you a great Truecar deal. I usually make people better deals when they walk up instead of the people that come in with those offer sheets. It's silly.

Also, I understand negotiating and paying as little as you can, but it's frustrating sometimes. I don't come in to the restaurant where you're serving burgers and beat you up over the price of the burger, or better yet, let you cook it and bring it out to me, then say, "let me think about it."

If a burger cost thousands of dollars less to make than you are selling it for, we would have to negotiate my burger.

I do have a bit of sympathy for car salesman, but if I walk in and offer you $500 over dealer true cost, you should just shake my hand and sign the papers. I can be in and out in 15 minutes instead of us going back and forth for 3 hours over $500 that I'm not going to pay you anyway, and you aren't going to get from me, when I can go to the next dealer and get the deal I want.

I will negotiate up to $300 variance and that's it. Depends on how bad I want the car. That includes paperwork fees too, which dealers try to sneak in on you.

Y'all both are making me wonder if my posts are incomprehensible.

Look, if I pay MSRP for in-demand or rare vehicle, that doesn't mean you or anyone else is gonna "save" money. Dealers aren't crazy about guys like me and Gaston b/c they have to put time and effort into the deal, much more so than you or ALX who'll take what they have on the lot.

Ask Gaston, I bet like me, he had to work to get that deal.

First, it usually costs dealers more for that certain car for reasons I've already identified. Second, the specific car for the specific buyer is generally fairly unique.

What are the odds either one of you is gonna buy when I buy or even from the same place anyway?

Internet research will tell you this, but you can also ask the dealer for the paperwork. I've never had an issue getting it and reviewing, but I generally have researched and know the numbers beforehand.

Google dealer holdback, advertising fees on the model you are looking for. The information is out there.

Hey Ken, I found a blue XLT 2wd, stick, with red wheels in Little Rabbit, Alaska. Can you call and work a trade so I can buy from you?

FWIW, I do just about all of it over email, unless I have a good relationship with the salesman.

He paid above MSRP, so what work would be involved other than the check writing?

I had to fight and fight and fight to get the damn dealer to look throughout his area (TX, LA, MS) to find what I wanted...came down to me putting down a $500 deposit and KEEP telling that fricker no when he'd call with shite I didn't want. You're not going to find it...I can give you deal...So I had to carry my arse to another dealer in Alabama, 2 hrs away, and start the whole fricking process again. With absolute morons may I add...What's wrong with this one, let me show you this one...look dude I already searched your inventory online and you don't have what I want...find it for me. $500, multiple calls on vehicles that had sorts of shite I didn't want...He even went so far as making me prove I had the money to buy a vehicle because he didn't want to look. One Friday, bam he finds it, a hundred miles or so away from him in FL...I tell him I want to buy it and I'm on my way...he says hold on we have to trade these guys one of our vehicles...call you next week...the next Friday I show up before the vehicle is there and go through the paperwork...they offer to sell me all sorts of upkeep shite I don't want, because damn the place is far as frick from me. Guy shows up right around 5 pm and they scrape the sticker from the other dealer off and give me my truck.

My other vehicle was worse, I flew 1400 miles to get it and drive it back. I was watching the price of that vehicle, and I knew they were going to update it again with a lower price, it was used and could track the price over time...they employed an agency to price vehicles...when it was where I was comfortable I had the bank email them a copy of the check made out to them for that specific vehicle. They picked me up from the airport in New Jersey.

B/c they're getting soooo rich off of you, I heard they just gave the next three trucks away.

What these guys don't get is that they sell 3-4 of "them" before one of "us".

It's not b/c we're tire-kickers, either.

It's not too bad after you've done it 25-30 times.

I've been lucky to be able to find what I've wanted on dealer lots. I don't think my next vehicle will be that way though. I plan on ordering from the factory and hopefully negotiating as best I can. We'll see how that goes Will be a couple years before that happens though.
