Even if you were going to another city with a good sized tech industry like Austin, you are still dealing with a lot of COL / housing issues, a number of which have been exacerbated by Covid causing people to sell in Cali, NY state, etc, and pay cash well over asking price for homes in these areas.

What if I told you that the COL in Austin is about 10% LESS than New Orleans?

Austin COL is only 5% higher than BR.

Louisiana is a complete joke of a state.

Work on the river baw.
I know two inspection companies. You start at over $65k and will be in the 80s in under a few years.
You also only work 4 days a week and your jib is literally putting jars in ships and collecting samples.

Seems like everyone I knew in blue collar is now doing this.

Figures are from the Council for Community and Economic Research. They have published city vs city COL comparisons since 1968.

Still doesn’t address housing, which is a known issue out there.

Median house listing price in Austin proper is $600k, property tax is about 2.24%

Median house listing price in BR is $260K, property tax is about 0.536%.

Median house listing cost in NO is comparable to BR, as is property tax.

So if you are buying, you are paying roughly twice as much for a house as principal and your taxes will be roughly five times higher. And housing costs tend to be a lot higher than most other “cost of living” inputs.

You can plug in to compare on bankrate.com. It was eye opening to me.

My husband used nerd wallet .com when we were looking to move. It was eye opening for us also. I was asking about Austin because the housing is high there but it is addressed above.

The New Orleans area is expensive for no reason. High insurance costs (both auto and homeowners), paying a premium for safety, private school, taxes, etc. COL here seems higher than Houston but the salaries are lower.

Unless you are living in the hood in new orleans or a very expensive part of Houston, you are going to be paying more for Housing in NOLA than Houston.

Houston just builds way more.

Well a friend of mine just sold their smaller house and much less land for 1.56 million in Seattle.

So yeah, they need to make a shite load more to live there.

I used the calculator and comparing seattle to nola.

The cost of living is 34.44% higher in Seattle, WA.

I think NOLA COL might be lower IF you're single/don't have a family.

The type of place and price level I rent in NOLA does not exist in the Texas cities. Restaurants and bars are cheaper for the most part. Ubers won't cost as much. Everything else is more expensive though.

Probably not as good as he thinks he is.

But really this is just another shite on Louisiana thread. I can’t tell if they’re all stuck in Louisiana or enjoy patting each other on the back for moving somewhere else. Pretty strange either way.

IS Salaries in Louisiana are a joke

I'm in IS, and worked at two different Louisiana organizations before switching to consulting. The pay wasn't really bad if you factor in cost of living. That being said, I knew some people working in IS who were getting paid absolutely shite pay. For my industry it really depends on who you work for.

I live in Austin proper in a nice neighborhood and paid $480K for my house in 2021 - when prices were hitting their peak.

It’s definitely more expensive than BR, but it’s not nearly as high as people make it out to be.

Also, no state income tax helps to offset the property taxes a bit.

You must not be as good as you think you are. We pay entry level software engineers $65k. Locally. You need to network more and get better at interviewing, and selecting companies, if you are actually any good as an engineer.

Mid level software engineers, Louisiana local, we pay $90-$120k salary with benefits

Housing is considerably higher in Austin than BR. It's not even close.
