Did you do a COL comparison? I'm not saying that the salary still isn't "too low", but it may not be as bad as you think.

Exactly. You're comparing apples to oranges when you consider cost of living in San Fran/Cali area compared Louisiana.

If you are a software developer with demonstrable experience AND worth your salt, you can easily negotiate a remote work situation with periodic travel to your home base office.

Most of the places you’ll get double that salary are also double the COL
But also double the savings and wealth accumulation. $120k minus $100k COL is better than $60k minus $50k COL.

When comparing salaries for software, you don’t have to go directly to San Francisco. That’s like saying you need to move to Manhattan to work in finance.

You can be in software in DFW, SLC, Raleigh, Atlanta, and Huntsville. Hell even making 120K in Austin is a better life than 65K in Baton Rouge. Those salaries are a joke and the companies know it.

It’s a small price to pay for some Poboys and tailgates.

Maybe rural Louisiana is cheap, but in BR and NOLA it's not. It's not NYC or San Francisco, but it's not cheap like you'd expect either.

COL here vs elsewhere likely explains some of it.

You probably make well into 6 figures doing so in Silicon Valley but are living in a van down by the river because housing is fricking insane.

Companies pay what people are willing to work for, so respectfully decline on that basis so they offer more next time.

$65K in Louisiana will get you a nice comfortable blue collar life. I know we all want to make more money, but 65k is nothing to sneeze at. I guess it just depends on what you want out of life.

This thread is hilarious.

Louisiana is LCOL? Maybe in the sticks. Nola and BR metros are not LCOL for what they are. Louisiana should be one of the cheapest places to live in the country considering it's objectively a bottom 3 state. It's like middle of the pack though in COL.

Also people saying well you could go to San Fran and make double. More like triple or quadruple haha.

In typical OT fashion it seems the only choices are shithole louisiana or the some of the most expensive places in the country. Nothing in between

But it creates a nice low cost of living and relatively cheap housing market for retiring yankees to live it up in.

That don't sound right. Systems Analysts are getting more than that with a few years experience and less coding.

What industry/location was this? I've seen some low salaries like that from a few companies, Lamar Advertising being one of them. Just curious.

You should be able to at least get $85k with 3-5 yrs experience down here.

Not sure where you are but just going to Baton Rouge or Lafayette a mid should see about 80.
I know some that's 6 years in making 45. It's ridiculous.
Better yet go full remote and open up your opportunities.

More like he’ll get triple in those cities and over double in cities like atlanta, Houston, Raleigh, etc as a SW Dev .
