Like everyone has said, it's ridiculously fun from May to August. I disagree with Abu on the cost of living. I know some ballers who live in pretty humble abodes there. You need to be rich to enjoy living there, otherwise you have to live way out in the burbs.

I'm guessing the pricier burbs would be on the northside like Evanston, Winnetka, Glencoe, etc.

My brother went to Chicago a few years ago during winter (work-related). Stayed at the W and enjoyed some good food. I wish I could make it out there one day and admired from afar.

Definitely, especially our friends and family there. I also miss the mountains, my husband and I used to love hiking and camping in the Shenendoahs. We'll be back in July & August for weddings in DC & Harrisonburg.

Hope all is well

Glad you're enjoying it here. I've been living here the past year and a half and absolutely love it. Sure, the winters are no picnic and as a southerner I'll never get used to them, but it's worth it for the kick arse summers and an all around amazing city.

I recommend going somewhere to catch the Blackhawks game tonight, the city loves this team and the bars will be electric (I'm watching at home so I can flip to the Hawks during LSU/ULL commercials). If you need any restaurant or bar recs, just holla

What's your favorite steakhouse? Bavette's and David Burke have got the best reviews from what I've seen, I plan on getting a nice steak tomorrow night.

I've been to a white sox game and a Cubs game. Aside from the nostalgia of wrigley, it's a total dump

Falls are pretty nice there too through October. Best food outside of New Orleans IMO

Chicago has some of the most restrictive gun laws in the country. Impossible to get shot there.

Yes. Only the criminals are armed in Chicago.

I lived there for 15 years.

I have lived here for 10 years and those of you saying there is no crime except for Southside are extremely mistaking. The area called Wrigleyville which as you can imagine is around Wrigley field is one of the most crime ridden parts of town right now. It's not just a "hood" problem.

DO NOT go to smith and wolensky. There are a ton of great steakhouses that are local to Chicago that you can go to.

DO go to as many hole in the wall bars as you can. That's where you're going to get a great feel for the city. I would suggest leaving downtown and going to Lakeview which is going to really show you a neighborhood feel.

Go to Portillos and get an Italian beef with extra sauce.

Wrigleyville crime might be bad, but it is NOTHING compared to bourbon street.

eta: not that that really means anything, but people on here (who haven't been) might assume they are similar.

Just went there, loved it, although I liked the hot dog much better than the beef sandwich. Lou minatis has by far the best pizza in Chicago, imho.

I'd be curious as to where your friends live. I live in Lincoln Park - one of the best neighborhoods in the city - in a 1 bedroom that's not expensive at all.

I've lived in/around Atlanta, Seattle, and San Francisco and my brother lives in Manhattan. The northside of Chicago is super cheap compared to all those except Atlanta.

Chicago, deep dish pizza is rubbish.

So many great places to eat, and many of them on the same street.

we went to Gibsons Steak House, when we were in town for the Arlington Million. Great food, just stay away from deep dish pizza in chitown, it's crap.

Gibson's is garbage.

Go to the Chop House if you want great beef in Chicago. The President and the Mayor, among others, dine there. In fact River North does not have great restaurants at all.

The best restaurants are in West Town (Avec, Blackbird, Bavette's, Au Cheval, Girl and the Goat) and Lincoln Park/Northside (Alinea, Longman and Eagle, North Pond) are not in the tourist areas.
