The crime and winters give Chicago a bad name. Honestly, I went with very low expectations and it was incredible. Did a Cubs game at Wrigley and people were covered in blankets in June (night). That wind is cold off the lake.

Great city though. Had no desire to go at first, and now I would love to go back soon.

And most of the big crime/ghetto is on the south side of town.

It's in the deep southside and further west side (out past the United Center).

Chicago is actually kind of like a European city in that way - the nice parts are in the center of the city and the periphery tends to be where the shitholes are. Some of the inner suburbs here are dumps.

The really rough areas of the city (Englewood, Gresham, etc) are more than 10 miles from downtown.

some are worse than others but Chicago is one of the best "big" cities in the U.S., downtown is awesome, burbs are nice, I think it's because most of the locals came from the burbs or small farming communities and are generally nice people that don't think they have to assume the edgy, in your face, assholishness that people that migrate to NYC do

Chicago has some of the most restrictive gun laws in the country. Impossible to get shot there.

It is the best city in America for about 2 and a half months of summer. No better place to be for the 4th of July each year. I've done it twice and absolutely love it.

Winters are absolutely unbearable though. I never could live there. You literally can't go outside for about 1/3 to 1/2 the year.
My thoughts as well. I need to make a return trip soon.

I came with low expectations as well, and was anticipating the city to be aesthetically similar to New York; dirty, crowded, fast paced. It's completely the opposite, which was a pleasant surprise.

It's also a lot more livable and cheaper. One can live comfortably on $60,000 - $70,000 here.

Supposedly, the way the city is designed (with alleyways and the grid pattern) allows it to be a lot cleaner than NYC, but I don't know much about that.

The tax burden isn't too bad, though that 9+% sales tax sucks. The city has become a lot wealthier over the last two decades, and crime actually isn't that bad here - it's about middle of the road as far as American cities go. The real worry is the financial situation of the city government.

I enjoyed Chicago the one time that I went to it, but I could never live there. This southern boy likes snow for a week when he goes skiing and then I don't want to deal with it. I could never deal with the snow.

They have gotten themselves into big trouble with the muni bonds. Hard to see how it doesn't end with somebody getting burned bad. Luckily the influx of young, rich hipsters makes the debt servicable for now.

The winter does suck in Chicago but you're really exaggerating here. March-November are fine to be outside if you know how to put a sweatshirt/jacket on and aren't a giant pussy. So pretty much 1/4 of the year sucks balls. But it's not really that much different than a lot of the Northeast- Boston was much more miserable than Chicago this winter. I love DC and have spent a ton of time there but as a midwesterner sometimes the summers are simply miserable for me there with the humidity. I can't handle being fully dressed outside and you start to overheat and just sweat buckets.

If the weather was nice year around in Chicago everyone would want to live there. Every city/area has a draw back.
