Can't buy the wine theory. I don't think I'm missing a damn thing. Of course the sommelier would disagree, but oh well.

Yeah, I can appreciate that some people just don't like wine. I'm not necessarily knocking a cocktail or, in some limited instances, beer with fine dining, but what annoys me more are people who will order a soft drink or tea or something. To me that's a bit...common.

My mom actually went to Clancy's recently - judging by what she told me, she shoulda went with the chicken.

Guess it was just a bad night...

That's pretty much what I get, dude. Especially if it's at lunch, 'cause I sure as hell can't consume any alcohol, y'know?

Talking about dinner at high-end restaurants. For lunch I have no issue. But to each their own.

The last high end dinner I had was at MiLa, I believe.

I got iced tea, but also an Irish Coffee. So I dunno, guess I'm neutral in their eyes.

What I hate are assholes that are so worried about what everyone else is eating they can't enjoy the fricking night out.

I was going to say this same thing. You worded it a bit more colorfully.

I rarely notice what others order. Except family because then you get to have some of it.

As to the whiskey issue. Anything other than water in whiskey?

Are you saying Jack and coke is not acceptable? Or 7&7?

I order bourbon neat, so I guess I could call you a raving puscatore if you water it down.

I don't think any of them are saying that it ruins their night. They just like to make fun of what rednecks eat when they are at restaurants.

Where are people like you when I'm out to dinner with my wife? I need a break from what seems to be the norm now. The quality of the restaurant shouldn't matter... "Manners are Manners"

I get so frustrated with the lack of manners these days. It absolutely infuriates me when I see men not holding doors for ladies or even worse, walking through the door in front of them. No more chair pulling, no more standing when they return from the restroom. I don't know what has happened to manners.

My 17 year old daughter has grown to expect good manners from boys she dates and she knows that any boy she brings home better display good manners or I'll throw his arse out. I started teaching my son proper manners when he was about 7 or 8 and now holding the door and pulling the chair for his mother or sister are second nature to him. We don't always stand when they return to the table because we usually end up in a booth when we eat out as a family.

OK, enough ranting.

To anwser the original question, it bothers me when people order steak well done or they don't go out on a limb and try new things. Especially my wife's sister... I took her and her husband to Ruth's Chris a few months ago as a "thank you" and she ordered a well done Filet and onion rings. The waiter nearly shite his pants. He looked at me and I just shrugged my shoulders. I didn't know you could cook a filet well done. The whole thing was a mistake; I should've taken them to Chili's.

At least you tried.

I really don't care that much what other people order, but I had to add to this thread to keep stiring the pot.

It's a heavy, greasy, fatty sauce that basically doesn't vary in taster wherever it's served.
Right and wrong. I've had terrible Alfredo. I've had great Alfredo. There is nothing wrong with heavy, greasy or fatty.

What about in a business setting? I'd personally avoid doing this. The consequences of possibly getting it wrong outweighs the potential benefits of getting right in my opinion.

There can be generational problems here too. I don't mind opening door for women still (and even do so in company I know I might get flak for it) but in some company of younger generations, even those that have been around, standing up for anyone coming or going to the table would seem insultingly archaic.

"I want prime rib, but make sure no pink or red". This was the last straw on a guy I was thinking about firing. He ordered it at the best steakhouse in Des Moines and the clients looked at him like he was insane.

what other things contributed to the thought of firing him? i cant imagine being fired for some of my food preferences.
