I must confess: I've actually ordered Chicken Marsala - twice. But in fairness, both times were at restaurants where this was said to be their signature dish.

I would add going to a nice Italian restaurant and ordering chicken alfredo.

Agree. I hardly eat much chicken anyway though. Many much better meats out there IMO.

But yeah, alfredo is pretty much the same anywhere. It tastes the same at most restaurants as it does for my to pour alfredo out the jar.

He wasn't asking if you say something to people.. he was just saying is there anything that makes you think "wtf?" when someone orders it.

It's not that big of a deal. No need for people to be rude or "high-horsed" about it.

I can read very well, thank you.. I stated my opinion. Nothing makes me think that, because, it's their business.

BUT, a roasted chicken at a restaurant that knows how to execute it properly can blow your socks off.

i agree with this. but i know how to roast a good chicken as well, and as such, will never be something i order.

when i go to a restaurant, i look to either order what the restaurant is known for, or it's something i rarely or cannot cook myself.

to be honest, i don't really care what other people order. if they enjoy it, then i guess that's all that matters. i just know what to order so i can enjoy my meal.

I lose respect for fellow diners when I'm at a fairly decent restaurant and someone orders anything fried.

Not meant in a disrespectful way, but not surprisingly this board draws a good percentage of food snobs.

IMHO taste trumps all. Eat what you like, life's too short to worry about image and perception.

Now I do cringe when a someone goes to a restaurant that specializes in a certain cuisine and orders something nowhere near that specialty area. You know what I'm talking about.

industrial beer

Also, there isn't a more boring sushi than plain sashimi. A slab of fish on a nugget of white rice? Yawn.

a slab of fish on a nugget of white rice is nigri sushi. sashimi is "plain fish" - though if the fish is high quality it doesn't need accouterment.

You cannot duplicate Gautreau's or Clancy's roasted chicken at your house. I guarantee that.

i do love fresh salmon, fresh tuna, surf clam, and octopus. however, i need to eat rolls to get full without breaking my wallet.

my favorite roll might be the spicy tuna from waka house. it is perfect

Even worse than what they order is how they say it. I used to work at Mansur's and people would order the "seafood alfred-OX" (alfredeaux).

But to answer your question:

chicken tenders
lasagna
steak - well done
white zin

Had the chance to have octopus paired with spaghetti on Friday, when I had lunch at August.

I picked the lemonfish instead.

nothing they do to chicken will sway me to order it (unless they fry it y'heard!)

should have rolled with the octopi. when cooked right, it is awesome. also love the whole BBQ squid they serve in some sushi joints

edit: also add chicken tenders to my list. i have a friend who will order that everywhere he goes. it is sad

I've had it before (remember very little about it). But the spaghetti thing had me scratching my head.

Besides, I thought that ordering something directly tied to our local waters was more important anyway.

Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.

On a related note, it makes me cringe when people are ordering sushi and refer to the nigri as "sushi." As in, "I want a spider roll and yellowtail sushi." I understand this is common practice, but it still bothers me for some reason.

I'm not sure there's a general category of food that makes me cringe, but with fine dining, anything other than wine or water to drink bothers me too.

It's a heavy, greasy, fatty sauce that basically doesn't vary in taster wherever it's served.

So you might as well steer clear from it unless you're heading to Ryan's after the ballgame.

Can't buy the wine theory. I don't think I'm missing a damn thing. Of course the sommelier would disagree, but oh well.

Strangely enough, I watched "Sideways" last night!
