To each his own. I don't think much of it myself, and I don't go to chain restaurants for higher end meals.

without drinking you'll probably spend about $120

btw, my Ruth's Chris experience goes thusly:

step 1: old fashioned
step 2: carpaccio
step 3: wedge salad
step 4: Napa Valley cab
step 5: NY strip
step 6: pay the bill
step 7: cigarette

no need for sides or dessert, IMO

Tip on the whole bill, I'd doubt the gift card will cover tip. Don't spend $120 and drop the $150 gift card and leave. I wouldn't think this is kosher.

$30 on $150 is fine.

Not sure if you eat at upscale restaurants often (you posted like you don't), but please don't go in there being nitpicky and looking for reasons to tip less than what they deserve. You have $150 free money to a great restaurant, for crying out loud! $30 of your own won't hurt you.

I didn't think you could use a giftcard on the tip - maybe that is a restaurant-specific policy though.

I think at the top end steakhouses it is all about personal preference. I think Morton's sucks, while others like it. Ruth's Chris is pretty good I'd say for the chains, up there with Cap Grille IMO. Del Frisco's is my favorite personally, b/c I think they have the best overall atmosphere/steak etc

I don't know about Ruth's Chris, but I've definitely tipped also on a gift card at other places before.

Yeah, it's probably dependent on the POS system used. At Dempsey's, they could not tip on the gift card.

I believe I've tipped on a gift card at TJ Ribs before though.

I don't care how much I'm spending on food, if the service is bad, they are getting a bad tip. No ifs, ands or butts about it.

With that said, you won't get bad service at Ruth's Chris.

They just opened a Del Frescos in ATL, it's in a badass spot, looking forward to trying it out.

Ate at Del Friscos on Fort Worth last year night before the LSU-Oregon game.
Was pretty good, but not better than Ruth Chris.
Actually went to Ruths in Fort Worth this past August instead of del Friscos.
They just opened a capital grille right there as well.
Ruths, del Friscos, capital grille literally all on the same block in downtown Fort Worth. That town loves some steak

A gift card for that amount of money free, then he wants to stiff on a tip with HIS money. He must be a truly great guy to spend a night with out on the town.
